"Paul and his team were absolutely amazing! Paul gave us a thorough estimate with a great price, and the price of the estimate was exactly what we paid after the new driveway was complete. The crew were very friendly and extremely hard working! They were efficient while being extremely precise. We are more than pleased with our beautiful new driveway and will absolutely call Maryland Curbscape for future concrete projects!"

"Driveway looks great now. Crew was able to come out quickly and got the job done in less than a day. Price wasn't the cheapest offer I received, but not the most expensive, either. In all, a fair value."

"Joe and the crew from E Stanley did a great job widening our driveway. The job consisted of three parts. First, dig under the existing driveway and remove the roots that were growing underneath. Second, dig a couple of feet on both sides of our existing driveway to widen it out. Finally, pour asphalt on top of the driveway to replace the old one. Joe came in at the best price and finish the entire job in a single day.."

"Working with First Impression Hardscapes was a very positive experience from start to finish.  Very professional, attentive to detail, and quality and customer oriented.  Mike Walters, Sales Manager, met with us to provide an estimate.  He measured and explained the various options, scope of work and process.  Mike was very patient in addressing questions.  No hard sell.  At the time we were exploring all replacement options for the driveway -- concrete; pavers; asphalt.  Using First Impression turned out to be the best value.  It also helped that the company was local and stands behind its work for five years.
Their crew showed up on time everyday, worked hard, and cleaned the area up before leaving.  John Morgado, principal owner, was at the site bright and early everyday and stopped by several times a day each day.  On each visit, John spent time talking with me, explaining each step as they progressed, and answering questions.  A foreman was on site at all times supervising and working.  I was impressed with everyone's work ethic.  it was evident that everyone at First Impressions takes pride in their work.
The work was performed within the time frame provided and was top notch!   John Morgado and Mike Walters were very professional, personable, and easy to work with.  Everything looks great and it was a job well done!  I have no hesitation recommending First Impressions and would use them again in a heart beat."

"Capital Paving & Sealcoating re-paved out driveway this week - - it is nearly 200 feet long and wide enough for three cars at the garage. They did an excellent job. They showed up on time, kept us informed every step of the way and truly cared about the quality of the work. They gave us an honest assessment of our driveway and pro's and con's of the options. I highly recommend them - - you won't be disappointed!"

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

The average cost of 1,500 square feet of asphalt ranges from about $10,500 to $22,500, depending on location, thickness, base material, and how accessible the job site is to crews and equipment. Keep in mind that your asphalt material cost may vary depending on its type, ranging from porous asphalt to heated blacktop. Standard asphalt costs $7 to $13 per square foot.

Gravel is one of the few driveway materials that can handle rain the second it’s installed. Unlike asphalt, which needs days to set, or concrete, which requires weeks to cure, gravel is ready as soon as it’s compacted. It’s naturally permeable, allowing water to drain straight through—with no risk of pooling or surface damage. Gravel driveways are one of the most affordable, at $1 to $3 per square foot, and can also last upward of 100 years.

Driveways should be sloped with a minimum 2% slope—anything lower will cause precipitation and runoff to collect. A 2% slope is the equivalent of a 2-foot rise over 100 feet. One quick way to check the integrity of your driveway’s slope: no more than four inches of water should collect on the surface longer than 15 minutes after rain.

The driveway apron is a technical term referring to where a private driveway meets the public street. If there is a sidewalk in front of the house, the driveway apron is typically on the opposite side of the public sidewalk from the driveway itself.

Asphalt and tarmac are not the same thing. Traditional tarmac, short for tarmacadam, uses tar as a binder to hold crushed stone together. Asphalt uses bitumen—a byproduct of crude oil—to bind aggregate. Though tarmac was once a go-to for roads, asphalt has become the modern standard. And these days, most surfaces referred to as “tarmac” are actually asphalt. So, while the names may overlap, the key distinction lies in the binder—tar for tarmac and bitumen for asphalt.
