"I want to correct a previous review I had prepared concerning my recent experience with VKB Kitchen & Bathroom regarding the conditions of two cabinet facings and small water damage around the glass shower drawers on a bathroom remodeling project done by the company 4 years ago. Although the contract and warranty conditions are clearly stated, within the constraints of these circumstances, Jason did an excellent job in working with me to resolve my concerns - keeping my best interests foremost in his actions and recommendations. As such, I want to make things right in giving him credit for OUTSTANDING customer service! Moreover, VKB as an organization does in fact stand by the quality and workmanship of their product and services."

"Bent Palm (BP) fulfilled their contractual obligations on 11 March. They finished the 25ftx10ft patio/porch project and collected the final check on 31 March. A project that began in October 2019, was suppose to take 2/4 weeks and ended up taking more than five months. Initially BP finished the work mid-November and the patio/porch failed its final inspection on 20 November. On 30 November the owner of BP and the project lead came out to the house to discuss how to proceed with the project and air out any concerns. At this point the patio they had built had sunk into the ground and metal supports were exposed. Many of the tiles were unstable and loose and it was a safety hazard. It stayed that way until late February 2020. In December we knew it was the holiday season so my wife and I were more relaxed about them finishing the job, but when we did not hear from them eight days into January I reached out to them via email. After no response for five days I sent another email on 13 January explaining it had been six weeks since our 30 November meeting and my patience was now beginning to run thin. The owner of BP responded, sent new quotes for additions we had discussed and final cost for original project. I signed the paperwork and sent everything back on 16 January, then I did not heard from him or the project lead the rest of the month. There was not any movement from BP towards completing the project since before the final inspection on 20 November. On 8 February my wife attempted to contact the owner of BP, three weeks after I had sent him the signed paperwork. He did not respond to her email. He did not text me, call me, or send me an email. We waited for his response for over a week but we never received one. Extremely frustrated I wrote a very poor review about BP on Home Advisor highlighting our situation. On 19 February, shortly after the review was published the project lead reached out to me. The questions that gnawed at me were, would he have even reached out if I had not blasted them on Home Advisor? Did they have any intentions of finishing the project at all before the review? I realize this is all speculation and I do not know the answer to those questions. What I do know is we had given them $25,000 already so we were very concerned they were going to eat the $2,700 and run, leaving us with a busted patio and porch that was not up to code. The owner of BP never showed any initiative to respond back to my wife and I until that review was written, so now it has become an integrity issue. On 19 February I was told the remaining work, including the additions, would take two days. The work was completed on 11 March and we received notification that the patio and porch had passed the inspection on 13 March. The GOOD: The patio and porch, now, both look great which is why I gave BP 4 stars for quality of work. They corrected the issues with the patio and everything we asked for regarding the porch was added. Ultimately my family and I are happy with it. I will also add, when we did speak with BP they were professional at all times. The BAD: Customers should never have to go through the experience and stress my family and I went through with BP, which is why I cannot recommend them. After 30 November their communication with us was terrible and any of the negative could have been avoided if they had shown some initiative to contact us."

"Every thing was done well and the cost was the lowest of the three bids we received. We were very pleased with the quality of the work and the professionalism of the sub-contractors. We were especially pleased that the work was finished on time. Bennington builders was responsive when we asked to return to correct and do touch-up work."

"After getting estimates from the three top-ranked Angie's List insulation companies, it was clear that AC & R was the best choice.  They definitely did not disappoint. They arrived on time at our house and proceeded to finish the job in approximately 1/2 day.  They were neat and clean and left the house in perfect order.  My husband was home for the whole process and said that they did any excellent job.  We are very happy with the workmanship and gladly gave them the highest ratings."

Custom Home Builders questions, answered by experts

Building a new home can be more expensive than buying an existing one, depending on the housing market in your area. Many homeowners still find that building a new house is worth the investment as they can choose the exact layout they want, as well as to choose their own floors, wall coverings, appliances, and finishes. If you live close enough to the build site, you can also stop by to check on the builder’s progress, which can provide some peace of mind that the project is worth it.

Green homes are often more expensive to build, averaging around $200 per square foot compared to the $150 per square foot you’d spend to build a standard home. However, green homes can save you money on your utility bills by consuming less energy or creating energy using solar panels or wind turbines on-site. They’re more expensive to build, but they often end up costing less in the long run.

Typically, architects do not build homes in a hands-on sense of doing the actual framing, roofing, or other building. Architects usually do not have the training and experience to build the homes they design. An architect would need to know how to do the specific trades required to build a house, which is possible but not a common practice. A general contractor or homebuilder typically oversees the actual details of building the house that the architect designs.

An A-frame home can be cheaper to build than a traditional house, but that is not always a given. Prices can be fairly similar in some cases, depending on the location, design, and necessary site preparation. Costs for an A-frame typically run between $100 to $200 per square foot, which is comparable to the cost of a traditional home. The cost of an A-frame can come in under those numbers if you opt for a prefabricated kit.

While it’s never too early to start planning for a major home improvement project like a home addition, give yourself at least a month or two to plan and design your addition, find a contractor, and get the permits in order. For larger projects like a second-story addition that require designing with an architect, plan on three to four months of preparation.
