"My designer, Junior, helped me through the entire process. He was so customer-focused and professional. Jason, the project manager, and Walter, Team Leader, ensured a smooth demolition and rebuild of my bathroom. The entire team was outstanding and truly dedicated in ensuring I was completely satisfied. Great work!"

"I looked to Home Advisor to find a contractor to replace our deck and give us ideas for our screened porch that really needed an uplift. I no sooner put in my contact information when I got a call from Tommy Greist, the owner of Bent Palm Design & Build. He set up a date and time to meet with my husband and I and and gave us ideas we hadn't thought about for our deck and porch project. His website was also very helpful to see other projects he had completed. His price was right so we signed the contract. Tommy's crew started the work a month later and they finished in under 2 weeks. We are very happy with the finished project and would highly recommend Bent Palm Design & Build to anyone looking for a dependable contractor to do any renovation project."

"I was very impressed with Sentri Homes - their customer service was excellent. They sent a subcontractor to install some vinyl laminate in my bathroom and he ended up getting glue all over the carpet in our bedroom. The sub ended up ghosting both me and Sentri, leaving me stuck with a ruined carpet. Sentri stuck with me for over a month to get the carpet replaced with the identical original and to get the vinyl job 100% completed. The carpet was a Home Depot exclusive and Sentri handled everything with them. I will be using Sentri for a much bigger renovation I have coming up soon, because I know that they will make sure everything gets done right no matter what problems come up. The vinyl looks great too."

"After meeting with numerous contractors in January 2020; we choose to work with Persky Custom Builders and the owner Josh Persky. They did a fantastic job remodeling my parent's dated kitchen on budget and in the timeframe promised. The whole project start to finish went well and my Mom is thrilled with her new kitchen. I am very impressed with the workmanship, attention to detail, and care put into the job by Josh and crew. When minor hiccups came up, Josh was always calm, candid, addressed issues quickly, even going above and beyond what was required. It was such a pleasure; we'll definitely work with Persky Builders on future projects. If you are looking to improve your home, look no further than Persky Custom Builders"

"This is my second kitchen with Dave Bennington and if I need a third, he will be my first choice. The crew always cleaned up every day before they left and little things were frequently fixed before we even had a chance to mention them. I especially want to give kudos to the electrician. His work was very neat, wires were run neat and cleanly. The tile guy was also amazing -- beautiful job arranging the backsplash tiles and cutting everything so neatly around the corners. The floor subcontractor could have been better; they didn't order enough floor tile and had to wait for the reorder to finish. The finishing crew was not as good as the original crew. I know these are not Dave's hand-picked crew, but I would use a different floor vendor the next time."

Custom Home Builders questions, answered by experts

It’s typically more cost-effective to move a building along with its accessories than to demolish and rebuild it from scratch. However, that’s only if you can move the accessories without damaging them. However, if you plan to demolish the accessories anyway, it is advisable to do so before the move to save costs.

The primary reason homes have crawl spaces is so the foundation can reach down below the frost line to avoid dangerous soil movement and structural damage when the ground freezes. They’re more popular in colder climates where the ground freezes down to a few feet, and slabs are most popular in warmer areas where there is no frost line. Crawl spaces also provide a space for utility lines to run where they’re at less of a risk of freezing.

Modular homes can go up or down in value depending on a few factors. In areas where real estate is appreciating, the value of modular homes is likely to increase, and vice versa. Additionally, the value of modular homes depends partially on the area. In cities where every other home is stick-built, modular homes might be considered a functional obsolescence, in which case they could be less desirable and go down in value. In either case, though, modular homes can still be a good investment, especially since they provide housing at a lower upfront cost.

Hiring a reliable home builder is an essential task, but there are a few questions you can ask a potential builder to ensure you they are trustworthy and up to the task:

  • How long do you expect the process to take?

  • Are you fully licensed and insured?

  • How much of the work will you subcontract?

  • Will you pull all of the necessary permits for the job?

  • How long is the builder’s warranty you include with your work?

  • How do you handle resolution for issues I might have with the finished product?

  • How much experience do you have?

Handypeople usually don’t hold trade licenses, so they typically aren’t qualified to tackle projects involving installing or making alterations to plumbing or electrical lines. Below are some jobs that a handyperson usually won’t be able to complete:

  • Installing plumbing for a new kitchen or bathroom

  • Replacing plumbing pipes

  • Installing or repairing septic systems

  • Running new electrical wiring

  • Installing a subpanel
