"I can’t recommend Penate Tile and Home Improvement highly enough! They recently completed a tile job in my basement, and the results are fantastic. The attention to detail and precision are top-notch—every tile is perfectly aligned, and the finishing is flawless. Even more impressive, they completed the entire project in just two days! "I used 858 Flooring & Remodeling to replace 1,000 sq/ft of basement flooring. I had 3 different types of flooring (tile, laminate, and carpet) and there was a lot of demo work to be done (including 400+ sq/ft of well stuck 8x8 tile). The estimate process with Grant was great. He broke the estimate down with a lot of options for services. This helped us decide what we were going to do on or own vs pay to have him do for us. He also had great suggestions on what type of flooring material we could use that would be most economical. I really appreciated his forthright estimating process. We went with 858 Flooring & Remodeling for two reasons, the price was reasonable, and we wanted a service provider that specialized in flooring. Between scheduling the service and the day Grant started, he was always available for questions and very clear on his instructions on the amount of materials I should purchase ahead of time. On the day the service was scheduled to begin, Grant arrived at the time he told me to expect him and his colleague George came soon after. Grant and George were at my place for 6 days and they demoed 1,000 sq/ft of flooring, leveled the concrete, fixed some larger issues with the concrete, put down new vinyl plank and floorboard and shoe molding. They were both a pleasure to work with, let us know when they were about to do something that would limit our access to areas of our house, and were always willing to talk through potential issues. When extra services were needed due to the condition of our concrete floor, Grant always offered different options and was upfront about what the additional cost would be. Most importantly, the quality of their work was first-rate. From protecting my furniture from dust due to the tile demo, to prepping the floor, to laying the vinyl plank and floorboards, everything was done very very well. The floorboards and shoe molding especially are perfectly aligned and finished off everywhere you look. I had a great experience working with 858 Flooring & Remodeling and would highly recommend them."

"It looks amazing. We wanted it to look like it had been painted white for years which we originally thought would require a glaze. It turned out that we didn't need the glaze so Mike reduced the cost of the job which was greatly appreciated. Mike was very easy to work with and very meticulous and professional. We would highly recommend him for unique painting projects."

"James from JZ Construction LLC was phenomenal. Not only was he transparent in his quote pricing, he moved some things around to make sure the job got done on our schedule. The tile work was beautiful and well done. The rebuild took a day less than we had planned. He even helped connect us with an electrician and repaired the cuts in the drywall done by the electrician. He and his team were amazingly nice. James went above and beyond. Will hire again for future jobs!"

"I?m very happy with the work Stan from Maryland Carpet Cleaning Services did for me! Our carpets were long overdue for a deep cleaning. After he cleaned five rooms, a staircase and an extra long hallway, the carpets look like new!!! Next year (or sooner) I will definitely ask him to come again!"

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

You can, in theory, tile your fireplace hearth with most tiles. However just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. For example, it’s much better to use unglazed tiles because glazed tiles are more resistant to cracking under extreme heat. Porcelain is more heat-resistant than ceramic, but you can still design the hearth as you like by putting the most heat-resistant tiles directly under the fire and, if it matches your style, add more decorative tiles further from the center of the fire.

The best bathroom floor tiles are strong enough to withstand the weight of a clawfoot tub. However, professional tile installation is essential. If the tiles are uneven or improperly fixed, they may crack under the pressure. Be careful when installing the tub—if it drops or drags on the tiles, it could easily cause scratches or cracks.

Different types of tile cutters may work best depending on the type of tile you are cutting and the size of your project. There are two main types of tile cutters: manual and electric. Manual tile cutters are quick and easy to use for small projects and softer tile materials, but they can only make straight cuts. Electric tile cutters make light work of big projects and can cut through harder materials.

Thinset mortar is the best adhesive for ceramic tiles on concrete. It is easy to work with and has a slower dry time than mastic or epoxy mortars. This longer dry time gives the installer more time to adjust tiles, which is especially useful for DIYers who may not have tile installation experience. It can also be built up to help level any depressions or gaps in the concrete subfloor.

Yes, provided you aren’t installing drywall over it. But you can skim coat it, apply new tile right on top, paint it, or stencil it. For more budget- and DIY-friendly options, you can install beadboard or apply decals. Just make sure that the current tiles are in good condition and prepped well for the paint or adhesive to stick.
