"Joe and the crew from E Stanley did a great job widening our driveway. The job consisted of three parts. First, dig under the existing driveway and remove the roots that were growing underneath. Second, dig a couple of feet on both sides of our existing driveway to widen it out. Finally, pour asphalt on top of the driveway to replace the old one. Joe came in at the best price and finish the entire job in a single day.."

"Great, careful job, and great customer service. I appreciated that Jeremy took a video of my neighbors's (abutting) driveway to ensure that there would be a record of existing conditions before breaking ground on my driveway. Thorough clean-up job afterward, which I appreciated."

"I have been waiting for 20 years to get a new driveway. Finally got it done. Mike came out to give us a quote in a timely manner. We booked the job and we are completely satisfied with the work. Alex and his team were amazing hard workers. They removed our old cracked and crumbling driveway and sidewalk to the front porch. They regraded the ground for the new wider driveway, poured a new driveway, sidewalk and steps. They also resurfaced the front of our porch. It was a three day job, but we couldn't be happier with the results. The team was courteous, hard working and professional. The clean up was great and new grass seed was laid along the driveway and sidewalk. We would definitely work with them again. Thank you All Star Contracting."

"Very well!! Kyle Hodges understood exactly what I wanted, and he and his team took out the unsightly cement walkway, and replaced it with a beautiful, wide, curving quartzite walkway at the front of the house and matching step-stones leading around, plus two wrought iron railings on the front porch. His team took about 6 work-days in August 2016 to complete the project (the railings were added later). The result is an elegant approach to my house that combines craft with art."

"All Co, Paving was very flexible in scheduling the work and did an excellent job on an aging driveway. Their workers are professionals that went the extra mile to clear the driveway border, thoroughly fill all cracks and put down 2 thick coats of sealant. The driveway looks better that it did 20 years ago when we moved in!"

"They covered our entire 1/2 acre property which a few years back was the runner-up in the Baltimore Sun's best gardens review. Edged and cleared out all of our beds, spread 10 yards of mulch, and rebuilt a 70 yard long french drain. Our neighbors commented "It's looks like something you see in a magazine." We agree! Amazing team -- so polite, attention to detail, and hard working. Love these guys!"

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

The dimensions of a driveway apron vary based on local building codes, the width of your driveway, and the distance between the driveway and the road. On average, aprons range from 12 to 24 feet wide and 8 to 18 feet long. Typically, the end of the apron connected to the driveway matches its width—such as 10 to 12 feet for a single-car driveway—while the end at the street flares out to allow cars to turn in and out more easily. In some areas, you may not be responsible for the portion of the apron that extends beyond the sidewalk, but this depends on local laws.

The three most common types of asphalt are hot asphalt, MC cold mix, and UPM asphalt. Hot asphalt is used most often for paving and patching roadways while it’s hot and workable. MC cold mix asphalt cures more slowly than hot asphalt, but it can be used for temporary patches and repairs in low-traffic areas. UPM is also used cold, but it can be used as a longer-term fix, usable in almost any conditions at almost any temperature.

To maintain their strength, asphalt driveways and parking lots need to be sealcoated once every two to five years. You may also need to reapply paint striping every few years as it fades to ensure drivers can safely navigate the parking lot.

New asphalt typically needs 24 to 72 hours to dry before it can handle light foot traffic and careful driving. Although it may appear solid after a few days, the full curing process, where the asphalt reaches its peak strength, takes much longer—generally from 30 days to a year.

During this extended curing time, the surface remains relatively soft and can be damaged by heavy vehicles, sharp objects, or high temperatures. To protect your investment, it's best to avoid parking heavy machinery on the asphalt until it has fully cured.

The exact time required for drying and curing depends on several factors, including the weather, the specific asphalt mix, and its thickness. For the most accurate advice tailored to your situation, consult with your asphalt contractor.

It’s best to weigh the pros and cons of each material and decide on your priorities for your driveway. Gravel won’t be an appropriate choice if your driveway experiences heavy traffic. You’ll find that you need to level and top it off regularly, which could make the material a much more expensive option.
