"Jessie and his team went above and beyond for me on short notice. I called him at 4pm for an emergency clean up that needed to be done. Even though my property was 30 miles away, Jessie was there 9 am sharp the next morning. Now that is dedication to your customer if I say so!!! GREAT JOB! They took care of the entire lawn. Even being extra careful around the many obstacles and even a fountain in the back yard. They took the time to do the job right! I will be calling again! Make sure you book him today. He is coming back next week to power wash my house as well."

"Several years back, I called for help and we talked through my problem. We concluded that no water was leaving my house and it was backing up out of a pipe in the basement. In talking through our architecture and location, he determined this was most likely something that could be solved by Baltimore City services (for free). That turned out to be the case. The City workers came out fairly quickly, identified and cleared the clog outside my home, and I paid nothing (outside of my tax returns, of course ... "my tax dollars at work"). Knock You Out could have tried to make some money off of me by saying they needed to come out and look at it, then referring me to the City, and then charging me for their time/truck-roll (while prolonging the entire thing for me). Knock You Out is not cold and unscrupulous. By spending time with me on the phone, but doing no work here and making nothing from it, they proved themselves to be honest and decent people. And that may be the main thing we shop for in home services."

"Going into the project I was very scared of having a HUGE mess with the dust and debris everywhere. Chris recommended we get a storage pod and his guys even loaded all of our stuff for us. I just want to say that Chris with Chesapeake was beyond my expectations. The level of professionalism that him and his crew had was amazing. He made my house still livable with the renovations going on and cleaned up the whole kitchen very nice when they finished. I am so happy with the finished product that my wife and I are now putting together a budget to have our master bedroom and guest rooms remodeled with this company soon. Chris had GREAT ideas for cabinets and final layouts that went well beyond my expectations. I would 100% recommend this company to anyone needing work done. With free estimates why wouldnt you call them??"

"Dave showed up, all 3 days, early (7am) and worked diligently. From time to time, my wife and I had questions regarding how to ideally improve aesthetics (ultimately resale value), Dave would provide detailed responses and patiently answer our amateur questions. When we didn't fully understand he took a minute to explain. From the get-go, Dave was flexible whether in the quoting process or construction phase. If you are like us, who care more about the outcome of the project rather than a fancy uniform, Dave is your excavator. Reasonable, experienced and reliable, we feel confident recommending Dave to our friends and families."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Drilled wells have a pipe sticking up that’s covered in a plastic or metal casing. On the other hand, a dug well will look like a big hole in the ground and is more similar to what you’d see in a fantasy or Western movie. If you want to be sure, contact the city for documentation on your property’s construction and excavation history.

No, a ditch isn’t a trench. A ditch is an open, relatively shallow channel that’s carved out of the ground and used for drainage purposes. In contrast, a trench is a deeper excavation that’s entirely underground. Trenches have many uses, including gas lines, sewage systems, and electrical wiring. Unlike trenches, ditches don’t get filled back in with dirt after they’re dug.

Trenchers can dig holes as narrow as 4 inches or as wide as 4 feet. Check the specifications of the trencher you rent or buy to determine how wide it will cut into the landscape. Better yet, let the excavation company know how wide you’d like the trench to be, and they can help you choose the right trencher for the job (or do it for you).

Landscape edging is more DIYable than trenching. You can DIY your own digging projects, but proceed carefully and only with proper knowledge of the equipment and appropriate safety measures in place. Keep in mind the project's scope and estimate how long it will take you to do it on your own. While you can certainly save money by DIYing home improvement projects, you can’t exactly hide an unfinished—or worse, ruined— landscaping job from the neighbors. It’s always safer to call an excavation pro near you to get an estimate.

Hard soil could be a sign of overly dry dirt, either from poor drainage or drought. It's important to test the nutrient levels, density, and drainage capacity of your soil to see if it's absorbing water properly. Begin by adding a light layer of water and observing how long the soil retains moisture. If you experience a good deal of runoff, you may need to aerate your lawn, apply a wetting agent, or hire a professional for a closer look.
