"Paul and his team were absolutely fantastic! They were so courteous and respectful and meticulous in their prep and carpentry work- and we had A LOT of things that needed fixing like rotted windowsills, broken deck stairs, incomplete trim moulding, broken shingles and a crooked garage cupola. They fixed it all! Now my 115 year old house looks so beautiful and I can’t thank Paul and his team enough. They were also so tidy and cleaned up their work areas every afternoon before they left. If you’re considering Olde England Painting just hire them. You will not be disappointed. Last but not least, they were also the most reasonable quote I got and I met with 5 other painters. I would hire them again in a heartbeat!"

"I highly recommend Kennedy Painting! Brain (the owner) was very personable and provided excellent customer service. When we walked around my house to going over what work needed to be done, he asked a lot questions and gave me some advice about different projects around the house. He also provided more than one estimate, so that we have different options to which we could choose from. Brian’s crew worked efficiently and did an excellent job with our exterior trim and deck. They scraped, sanded, primed and painted the trim of our house and sanded and painted our deck, not only to make it look better, but to preserve it for years to come. Thank you Kennedy Painting!"

"I had some minor carpentry work done along with the exterior of my house (including trim, gutters and downspouts, shutters and garage door) and an inside wall in my house that needed to be muddied, primed and then painted. The exterior included power washing the house and caulking every area that needed caulking and that was extensive. I can only repeat all the 5 star reviews and if I could give Ozy and his crew more stars I would. When I called to have Ozy come to my house for an estimate he showed up exactly on time the date that we set (something I've found doesn't happen on too many occassions!), sent me an estimate exactly on the date he said he would (which again doesn't always happen) and his price was extremely fair and I hired him. He and his crew did an OUTSTANDING job and like Gregory said, went beyond our expectations. Ozy has a great eye for detail and doing things that I didn't see that needed to be done but did. Our house was done in 3 days and each day they left the house one would never know workman had been there. He also helped my boyfriend install a curtain rod that my boyfriend couldn't have done on his own, at no extra charge even though it took almost another hour of his and his associates time. If anyone wants to see the work that was done I'm happy to share where I live in a private message. My money was well spent! Kudos to Ozy and his associate that worked with him."

"Willyan and his crew did an exceptional job from day 1. Everything was explained up front and done professionally. He even replaced some broken solar deck lights at no cost which was a pleasant surprise that surpassed my expectations. Our home looks better than ever and have his team to thank for that. Highly recommend contacting Willyan for your next painting project if you want to be treated with “first class” service."

"Work was performed exactly as discussed and agreed to (match existing paint colors) at estimated cost. Start was delayed at our request due to high heat and humidity, with no complaints. Work was further delayed through no fault of Arch Painting due to continuous wet weather. Once a good weather window finally occurred, the work was performed quickly with no impact on us. We were totally satisfied with the quality of the work and the finished product."

"Ageu and his team did an amazing job. They came out for a quote early in the summer, and provided a reasonable estimate. Carpenters repaired some rotted trim on my old house, and then within a week, the entire house was scraped and sanded, powerwashed, primed, and painted, including two tones on the trim work. It looks phenomenal! They even powerwashed my deck for me!"

Customers say: Terrific value

"As a detail-oriented home owner who aspires to perfection, I expect all aspects of a project to be completed to my satisfaction. I could NOT be more pleased with the professionalism, the craftmanship, the attention to detail, the arrive early, leave late in the day ethos, the go-the-extra mile work ethic of the experienced team at Gold Painting. From the thorough and prompt quote from the owner, Alex Silveira, to the unusually thorough and efficient work of team members Tony (project leader) and Rui (his brother), Nelci and Yuriel (his son), Hector, Milton and Sylvano, the painting project exceeded my high expectations. As is my practice, the vetting of Gold Painting revealed a highly reputable 15+year old company: an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau (with glowing recent reviews), in-force copies of Liability and Workman's comp insurance, registration with the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs, alignment with a prominent local developer (Finnegan) and a recent "Gold" standard review from a Lexington neighbor. Our historic pre-Civil War property required the TLC that the Gold Painting crew delivered. Minor carpentry (above and beyond expectations), thorough power-washing, scraping, priming (oil) and top coating (Sherwin Williams Duration latex), and meticulous clean-up. Both parts of the ambitious two-part project (front of the barn (rustic red) & street-facing side of the house (extreme white) + painting and hanging 13 solid wood shutters-satin black); driveway-facing side of the house that required covering many windows) + painting the front door were completed in just four days. As an unexpected but highly welcome bonus, Tony had Nelci and Milton paint the front porch decking. I solicited quotes from five contractors and my wife and I are more than delighted with the flawless result. We will hire the exceptional Gold Painting crew again in the Spring for additional carpentry and paint work. I look forward to working with them again!"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan and protect it from the elements. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it is not impervious to damage from moisture, sun exposure, splintering, fading, and rot over time. Applying a protective finish creates a shield that preserves the wood's strength and appearance, potentially extending its life by five to 10 years.

When choosing a finish, it's helpful to understand the difference between a sealer and a stain. A sealer sits on top of the wood, whereas a combination stain and sealer soaks into the top layer. Because it penetrates the wood, a stain generally offers better protection against UV damage and rot and lasts significantly longer. For the best results that also preserve the wood's natural color, consider using a near-translucent stain.

To maintain protection, plan on reapplying the stain or sealer every two to three years, either as a DIY project or by hiring a professional.

If you have a smooth, already bonded concrete surface, painting a concrete pool deck can be a great way to brighten up the area and add longevity. If the surface has another covering or a different type of paint has been used previously, you won’t be able to paint it without removing the existing coating. Wooden decks benefit from painting as it helps to keep them watertight. Quality pool deck paints also help make the surface less slippery and less likely to gather mold and mildew or prematurely crack.

Yes, you can and should paint or stain pressure-treated wood to help prevent the boards from cracking. However, you must wait for the wood to dry out completely before applying any finish. Freshly treated wood can take weeks or even months to dry; a common recommendation is to wait three to six months. To check if the wood is ready, perform a simple water test: drip some water onto the surface. If the water beads up, the wood is still too wet and needs more time to dry. If the wood absorbs the water, it is dry enough to be painted or stained. You can proceed with building your deck or fence while the wood is still wet, but you will need to wait to apply the paint or stain.

Two coats of stain are ideal for the best protection and aesthetic appeal. However, if your decking is made of particularly dense hardwood, you may only need one coat. If you want an intense color, two coats are ideal.

Wood stains last anywhere from two to five years, depending on exposure to the elements, your local climate, the type of stain, and the surface it’s on. For instance, vertical surfaces last longer than horizontal surfaces. Some types of woods, like dense hardwoods, will require a recoat yearly, as they are too dense for the stain to absorb. In any event, apply a recoat every 2 to 4 years. As for storage, a can of unopened stain can last up to 5 years, though results may vary.
