Customers say: Quality work

"Was having a potential home inspected for structural integrity. Spoke to Bob on the phone a few times. Since the home’s basement primarily consisted of a giant crawl space, I was told Don would do the job. Ultimately, the day before the scheduled inspection, I couldn’t get ahold of Don. Bob said Don was “feeling sick,” so the job was off. Frustrating, but a blessing in disguise because we ended up going with Colonial Restorations (the home was built in the 1800s). Colonial Restorations, LLC is the “go-to” for older home inspections and repairs. Tom was amazing (his son Brad is soon to take over the business)! They were both prompt, professional, and thorough. Very pleased with their work and thorough report/estimate. Colonial Restorations, LLC PO Box 868 Fiskdale, MA 01518 508-735-9900"

"Backyard Collaborative did the design for our second story addition. I have to say the design aspect was terrific. It really fits with the style of our house. They then handled the major demo and framed the shell. Nice job. Inspector, however, said framing was a bit "rough". But the guys were all great to have around, no problems at all."

"Sean Fennell came out at short notice to give his structural engineering perspective on my planned home rehab project in North Shore area, MA. I'd invited a Home Depot guy to come out and quote for Andersen windows as a point of comparison with Harvey windows which my contractor recommends on cost grounds. The Home depot guy, who was very shrewd and who has a builder's background, suggested I get a structural engineer in first. Which is how I got round to contacting Sean Fennell. Sean gave me useful and scientifically deducted information relating to roof framing, foundation works and insulation factors, after making a detailed inspection of the property. It's a 100 year old home with a lot of peculiarities so his insights should help ensure my project meets code. He also gave me a vote of confidence in the building contractor whom I've chosen after viewing the contractor's floorplans and preliminary approach to the project. I consider it money spent wisely. I would recommend Sean without hesitation if you're looking to start out on any home renovation project, big or small."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

The depth of any foundation style depends on your climate and how deep the frost line is, as building code requires that the footers of a foundation—which are built into a monolithic slab—sit at least a foot below the frost line. At the southern tip of Florida, for example, a monolithic slab foundation would only need to sit 12 inches under the soil at the widest parts. On some parts of the Canadian border, the frost line is 100 inches, which would mean a minimum of 112 inches, which is prohibitively deep for a monolithic slab.

The early stages of building a house are harder than the later stages; laying the foundation and framing the house are two of the most challenging steps. However, it varies for everyone. Some people have difficulty installing HVAC, plumbing, and electricity, while others find it harder to plan the house and secure the necessary permits.

Water can seep into porous materials like wood beams, floor joists, and roof rafters within minutes, but they’ll need to see prolonged exposure before you have structural damage. Mold can start growing within 24 hours, and mold can eat away at the structural components over time. Wood rot is more of a concern, though. Wet and dry rot are fungal infections that set in in moist conditions and rapidly deteriorate wood, causing major structural damage within just a few months in some cases.

Structural engineers specialize in all aspects of a building’s structural integrity, including the foundation. Foundation engineering is a critical part of structural engineering, so structural engineers are experts in foundation design. Many foundation repair companies either have a structural engineer on staff or one they work closely with, so be sure you look for that when deciding who to hire for foundation repair.

Failure to compact the soil during construction is the most common cause of leaning retaining walls. In addition, poor drainage can lead to excessive water pressure behind a retaining wall, pushing against it until it begins to move forward away from the soil it is holding back.
