Customers say: Quality work

"Was having a potential home inspected for structural integrity. Spoke to Bob on the phone a few times. Since the home’s basement primarily consisted of a giant crawl space, I was told Don would do the job. Ultimately, the day before the scheduled inspection, I couldn’t get ahold of Don. Bob said Don was “feeling sick,” so the job was off. Frustrating, but a blessing in disguise because we ended up going with Colonial Restorations (the home was built in the 1800s). Colonial Restorations, LLC is the “go-to” for older home inspections and repairs. Tom was amazing (his son Brad is soon to take over the business)! They were both prompt, professional, and thorough. Very pleased with their work and thorough report/estimate. Colonial Restorations, LLC PO Box 868 Fiskdale, MA 01518 508-735-9900"

"Sean Fennell came out at short notice to give his structural engineering perspective on my planned home rehab project in North Shore area, MA. I'd invited a Home Depot guy to come out and quote for Andersen windows as a point of comparison with Harvey windows which my contractor recommends on cost grounds. The Home depot guy, who was very shrewd and who has a builder's background, suggested I get a structural engineer in first. Which is how I got round to contacting Sean Fennell. Sean gave me useful and scientifically deducted information relating to roof framing, foundation works and insulation factors, after making a detailed inspection of the property. It's a 100 year old home with a lot of peculiarities so his insights should help ensure my project meets code. He also gave me a vote of confidence in the building contractor whom I've chosen after viewing the contractor's floorplans and preliminary approach to the project. I consider it money spent wisely. I would recommend Sean without hesitation if you're looking to start out on any home renovation project, big or small."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

To keep your Cambridge home safe during structural engineering work, install sturdy child and pet barriers around work zones, and request lead-safe and dust-control practices, especially in pre-1978 homes. Use HEPA filtration to minimize airborne particles. Choose design features like secure railings, non-slip surfaces, and proper stair heights. After work is complete, conduct a thorough cleaning and air quality check before allowing children and pets to re-enter.

Helpful?

In Cambridge, foundations are most susceptible to issues due to clay-rich soil, high groundwater, and freeze-thaw cycles. Basements near the Charles River or Fresh Pond often face water intrusion. Roof structures, exterior porches, and load-bearing walls can deteriorate from heavy snow and age. Homes in older neighborhoods may also have undersized beams or outdated framing, increasing the need for periodic structural assessments and targeted repairs.

Helpful?

In Cambridge, cosmetic projects like adding skylights or removing interior walls focus on enhancing light and space, often requiring extra review in historic neighborhoods. Functional projects—such as stabilizing foundations or resolving water intrusion—are typically urgent and may uncover hidden structural issues. Both types must consider Cambridge’s soil conditions and older construction methods, but functional repairs demand immediate, comprehensive solutions to ensure long-term safety and stability.

Helpful?

As Cambridge homes age, structural engineering priorities shift from monitoring early settling and minor cracks to addressing foundation reinforcement, roof load management, and waterproofing. Older properties, especially in neighborhoods like West Cambridge, may require seismic retrofits, repairs to original timber framing, and upgrades to outdated support systems. Seasonal freeze-thaw cycles and clay-heavy soil often drive the need for more robust long-term solutions as homes mature.

Helpful?

In Cambridge, structural engineering projects carefully blend safety, modern living needs, and the city’s architectural character. Engineers often use concealed steel supports, match existing brick or woodwork, and design open layouts that respect historic moldings or window placements. Projects in areas like Avon Hill or Mid-Cambridge must also comply with local historic district guidelines, ensuring updates enhance both function and the unique visual appeal of Cambridge homes.
