When I insisted that they leave the block edging where the new beds were added he expressed a couple times that he thought it would look better without, I eventually saw it and was glad he suggested it. His crew also added a cute little circular rock area when they extended the bed and some of the rocks weren't needed."

Unfortunately, no: Homeowners’ insurance won’t cover the removal of a tree before it falls, no matter how dead or precariously positioned it is. Homeowners’ insurance usually will only apply when a tree has fallen and caused property damage.

If you’re planning on keeping the tree, unless the roots are invasive, there’s no need to remove them, as doing so can cause damage to the tree. If the tree has been cut down and the stump and roots are left, grinding and removing the stump can cause root decay for some species. For other species, the stump and roots will need to be removed to prevent pests, disease, and possible tree regrowth.

It can be difficult to determine when a tree should be cut down, but there are a few signs to look out for. Signs include a tree that’s severely leaning to one side, has extensive storm damage, or has a hollow trunk. It’s best to hire an arborist to inspect the tree to determine if it can be saved or needs to be removed. 

If you’re taking down a tree that you don’t suspect is affected by disease or pests and it’s nowhere near your home or other structures, then calling in a tree company should work fine. However, anything more involved means an arborist is a better option. Most trees can be successfully transplanted while they are young, but pines, walnuts, and some oak tree varieties are more difficult to move because their root systems grow deeper than most other trees. Also, trees adapted to sandy soil with wide root systems like beeches, willows, and aspens are harder to dig out because their roots spread much farther out from the trunk. In these cases, unless the trees are very young and small, it’s a good idea to consult a tree planting professional.
