"⸻ Michael did an excellent job installing French doors in my home. His craftsmanship really stood out—everything was done with care and precision. The doors look amazing and completely transformed the space. He was efficient, tidy, and clearly takes pride in his work. Highly recommend Michael if you’re looking for top-quality work and attention to detail!"

"Eric and co are the best - attentive, listen, give their professional advice, and just do a great job. The project went really well - repaired water and bug damage and fixed what was originally done in a not so great manner. Our third successful project w/ Eric and team. Very pleased"

"We had a challenging project: converting a 200+ year old kitchen in a small footprint into an updated, classic yet high-end kitchen. The project involved carefully pulling up the original plank-floorboards, building a new ceiling, tiling the floor and fireplace hearth, installing custom cabinetry, appliances, lighting and re-routing plumbing and electricity, among other things. Sean's crew did a wonderful job from start to finish and kept their promise on timeline and cost. As with all projects, particularly old houses, a number of unforeseen issues came up and Sean's crew was able to solve all of the issues. We are ecstatic with how our kitchen came out. To top it all off, the Boston Globe's Magazine featured our kitchen in one of their issues. We give McCabe General Contracting our highest recommendation."

Closets questions, answered by experts

Although you can complete a closet frame in just an afternoon, finishing the entire closet will take a few days to a week. However, that’s still not as much as the average time it takes to remodel a closet, which can take anywhere from several weeks to more than a month. That’s because you also have to consider the time it will take to demolish the existing space, plan a new design, order materials, and actually install it.

Plywood, MDF (medium-density fiberboard), and solid wood are all popular options for closet shelving. Plywood and solid wood are sturdy and ideal for extended shelves or heavy items. MDF is a budget-friendly choice for light to moderate storage, but it can sag under heavy weight if not adequately supported. Wire shelving is another alternative that allows airflow, making it especially useful in humid spaces such as laundry rooms or basements.

Whether it’s less expensive to build or buy a closet depends on both the type of closet and whether or not you’d be constructing it yourself. The cost of custom closets built by a pro ranges from $1,300 to $3,800, but you may be able to DIY it for as little as $400. By contrast, prefabricated options go as low as $200 and up to $3,000, so it’s almost always less expensive to go this route.

There are a few reasons custom closets are expensive: materials used, the luxury factor, and time to build. The people who can afford custom closets are those who can afford increased rates, and construction workers and contractors know this and charge accordingly. The time to build custom closets is substantial, especially if expensive material is being used or intricate details (like carved wood) are added to the project.

Different types of closets are defined mostly by size. A few different types of closets include:

  • A reach-in closet is a smaller closet that you can stand in front of and reach everything inside it. Aside from the size, the doors and the level of drywall finish are typically the largest price factors.

  • A walk-in closet can be anything from a small 5-by-5 feet closet that has a narrow walkway with shelves on both sides to a 100 square foot bedroom-sized closet with shelving along the walls and plenty of room to move around in.

  • A built-in wardrobe often does not have a door and leaves the clothes and other contents open to the room, whereas a closet usually has a door to separate it from the rest of the room.
