"Gabby did amazing work! We wanted to convert a normal coat closet in our dining room into a built-in display and storage hutch. We called a couple other contractors and they quoted us between $5,000 and $8,000. Gabby came in for a quote, we described what we were looking for, and he could do exactly what we wanted for less than half the other quotes. Gabby did a quick sketch for our reference and was also very accommodating of some design changes late in the process. Installation was went quick and without a problem. The quality of the cabinet is fantastic and it looks better than we had even imagined. He was also very friendly and communication was easy. Can't recommend his work enough."

"Rob is trustworthy, diligent and honest. He adised me how to save a large amount of money, communicated well about the schedule for the work to be completed and did the work excellently. He was also able to help with a couple of lighting issues as well. I would highly recommend Rob and will ask him to come for other projects."

"Allen Cohen was the consummate professional. He is an expert in the field of kitchen tune-ups. He was extremely helpful in helping me determine the best approach for a new look. We discussed several options, and I decided to move forward with refinishing my 25 year old cherry cabinets. Allen's staff was very professional and engaging. The expertise in refinishing and fixing challenging areas was amazing. I would recommend Allen Cohen's Cabinet Tune-up to family and friends."

"Every part of this project exceeded our expectations. The company was very patient with our most picky requirements, figuring the best way to give us the kitchen we wanted. Many of the other companies we considered wanted to throw everything existing into a dumpster. Cabinet Cures let me keep the few things they couldn’t replace exactly. They also offered to enlarge the refrigerator space so we could get a new huge one. Probably the best feature was the way they schedule and complete the job in one week. The crew were all friendly and professional—so comfortable having them in the house. Throughout the office called to make sure of the smallest detail and made suggestions we would not have thought up on our home. Price was very fair, not the lowest or highest. If we had another kitchen we’d use them again."
Even the adjacent dining area benefited from the update.

Closets questions, answered by experts

We use storage in nearly every room of the house, so it's no surprise that we lose track of things from time to time. The best way to organize storage is to declutter each year to cut down on auxiliary items that can be donated or tossed. Once you decide what's worth keeping, create an inventory list for all boxes you won't open for at least six months.

Walk-in closets are always the biggest and can easily be more than 100 square feet. Primary bedroom closets, even if not walk-ins, are the second largest category in most homes and sit between 30 and 80 square feet. Linen closets, utility closets, and built-in closets are smaller and, depending on their usage, tend to be between 10 and 50 square feet.

Yes, books are typically heavier than clothes, unless you have a collection exclusively of paperbacks or comic books. That’s why packing lots of books warrants careful planning and consideration. Consider packing up your reading collection first to determine whether you need to downsize it before loading it into your moving truck.

You can design your own closet, but it’s usually better to hire a professional to do the work for you. Not only will you get years of design experience to guide you toward the right layout and material choices, but you’ll also only pay slightly more hiring a professional than you would creating your own plans and hiring a carpenter. A high-quality closet designer can provide insight into how to lay out your closet, and they may be able to find you a good deal on the carpentry or complete the work using an affordable, in-house team.

You may need a building permit to add a closet, depending on the size and kind of work required to install it. The most likely scenario requiring a permit involves changing the structure of the house and performing electrical work for closet lighting. A permit can cost between $100 and $450. If you’re installing a smaller reach-in closet, a permit may not be required, but always check with your local municipality and consult a closet designer or builder.
