"I decided to call every authorized Carrier dealer that were local. This was the only company that didn't try to price gauge me. He gave me the best price. The system, I found out later, is close to around 10000 retail, which is way out of our price rang. It's a 3 ton two stage heat pump, and a 3 ton variable speed air handler. The thermostat is computerized and very good at communicating with the outside units. According to the weather, the equipment works to make sure everything is energy efficient. Irish installed this, and the owner came out and stayed during the installation. We had a second company come out to get a second opinion to make sure everything was installed correctly which it was. Wholesale I've heard this unit is around $5000 for a company, which means he barely charged me for labor! His price was the best and I appreciate his honesty. They didn't charge me to improve the air flow in our home. I'm glad they let us take advantage of this beautiful system and how much they helped my mother and I in keeping the costs as low as possible for the best product out there! I cannot state how much I recommend you call this company. They went above and beyond to service us and made sure everything was to our satisfaction. They even added an extra 9 years on the warranty at cost. This extra warranty was to cost us $600 when we had been quoted from other companies for over $1000. Most of this cost was reduced as well due to a rebate he was able to get from Carrier, and he paid the rest out of pocket and said it was a gift. We didn't even have to pay for the extra warranty. He also installed a damper and extra register in the kitchen. He enlarged a vent upstairs and also installed a high efficiency air filter for free! This is the bottom line. He was protecting our interests and took advantage of all the deals out there from Carrier for us. So many companies take advantage of senior citizens, but I am so grateful for how he treated my mother. He was done with all of this servicing and work by July 31st."

"When I called, after normal hours, I was answered right away by a live person and was able to set up an appointment for a few days later. They called the night before to confirm, and called again a half hour before they arrived. The technician, Chris, not only performed the tuneup, but found and fixed a wiring error I made in in the Smart Thermostat I bought and installed myself a few days prior and gave me some advice on programming it for maximum efficiency. Very happy with the service!"

"We contacted Angie’s List for recommendations for Blow-in Insulation to refresh older insulation in our attic. Three companies we recommended to us. Two phoned the next day. I never heard from the third. I told both I was gathering information and would call to schedule an estimate. I called and scheduled two companies, including USA Insulation, to come make an estimate. One company called one minute before scheduled and wanted to re-schedule. Chris from USA was on time. We were pleased with his offer and accepted. He scheduled the installation for the next day. William and his helper arrived, set everything up, and went to work. I checked regularly and photographed the attic. When they were through, they thoroughly cleaned the area. We were quite pleased. Shortly after completion, Michael, a company inspector, arrived to check the work. I would give the company an A+."

"I had called four different companies to provide estimates to fix my sump pump pipe that went out through the front of my home. Three estimates were somewhat close to each other in price and how to make the repair except for one which was very different. My friend recommended that I call a guy named Jonathan with WonDrain. He did drain repair for her boss and word spread fast around her office on how he did a fantastic job. Jonathan was the first one scheduled to meet with me and also the only one of them to show me with a borescope what was blocking the pipe. He was very funny and knowledgeable. He took the time to explain how everything worked and what to expect in the end from most companies. He marked in detail the pipes exact locations with depth in the yard to help the next company with their bid. I didn't know why he would do that and thought it was strange, but then he was a bit quirky. We hired WonDrain because not only were they less expensive by almost 20% but Jonathan was absolutely correct on how everyone would bid the job. The other 3 companies all bid the same way and Jonathan's reason why they did made sense. In the end and true to word of what my friend said not only did they cost less but they made my yard look so much better than it did before I had the problem pipe. My neighbor who had his pipe dug last year and still has a small pile of dirt left thought we hired a landscaping company and not a plumber."

Energy Efficiency Auditing questions, answered by experts

Upgrade to double-glazed glass or apply energy-efficient coatings to reduce heat loss and utility costs.

You can save money on heating oil through a combination of improving home efficiency and smart purchasing strategies.

Home Efficiency and Usage:

  • Improve Insulation: Ensure your home, especially the basement and attic, is well-insulated and sealed against drafts to prevent heat leakage.

  • Manage Your Thermostat: Use a properly calibrated and programmable thermostat. Lower the temperature by a few degrees, particularly when you are away from home or asleep.

Purchasing Strategies:

  • Buy in the Off-Season: Order heating oil during the summer months when prices are generally at their lowest. This strategy is most effective if you have a large primary tank or a separate storage tank to accommodate bulk deliveries.

  • Consider a Delivery Contract: Some companies offer contracts with a set price for the term. This can lead to savings if market prices for oil increase, but you might pay more if prices drop.

A home energy audit costs about $420 on average, with prices ranging from $100 to $2,250 or more. The final cost depends on factors like your home's size, location, the thoroughness of the audit, and the specific tests performed. A basic Level 1 walk-through inspection typically costs between $150 and $200, while a comprehensive Level 3 audit with detailed testing and a report costs around $900. Homeowners may be able to use the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act’s Energy Efficient Home Improvement credit to cover up to $150 of the audit cost.

Costs for common individual tests include:

  • Blower door test: $350

  • Duct testing: $100

  • HERS test: $375

  • HERS certification: $200

  • Infrared imaging: $200

Common warning signs of an overloaded electrical panel or meter box include frequent circuit breaker tripping, flickering or dimming lights, scorch or burn marks, and a burning scent coming from the panel. A circuit breaker trips as a protective measure to prevent overheating and potential fires. If you observe any of these signs, turn off the affected circuit breaker and move some devices to a different circuit. If the problem persists after turning the breaker back on, you should contact a professional electrician to resolve the issue.

Wood windows fall in the middle of the window frame materials when it comes to energy efficiency. They’re more insulating than aluminum and vinyl, but they aren’t as efficient as fiberglass or composite frames. If you love the look and lifespan of wood windows and want to maximize efficiency, you can upgrade to double-pane or triple-pane glass and consider window tinting and low-emissivity (low-E) coatings to minimize heat transfer.
