"The provider claimed he was doing the procedure correctly by sanding, just one spot and putting stain over the area. He refused to completely sand, the whole table, and just claimed by putting a second coat of stain, it would look fine. He did not have any tools or sandpaper with him and asked us for some sandpaper . I inquired about sanding the whole table and he kept insisting that it was fine that he only sanded the spots that had crazy glue drop on it. I said he needed to sand the whole table and he just sat there and argued with me. He argued with me so much. I told him to go and leave the project. We called him after a few days and we requested our money back that he did not complete the job. He said he could do it the way I wanted it done by sanding the whole table. We gave him another chance to correct his work. He came out and worked on the table for two hours. He sanded 1/2 of the table and spots on the other half of the table, he did not sand the two inserts that also belong to the table. Then he proceeded to stain all pieces whether they were sanded or they were not sanded. He put stain over the old stain and said that that was fine, he had used a little steel wool to rough it up. and then he stained the half of the apron because he couldn’t see the top of the whole apron. He sloppily corrected a nick in the table and said it was fine. Everything he touched on the table made the table worse, I told him to stop working on it and leave and I wanted my money back. He refuses to give my money back. He does not know what he’s doing. He lied about his ability. He’s an old man that is not all with it in the brain. He thinks he wants to come back and try to fix it some more. I am not letting him touch my table. On further inspection he has sanded out the routed edge of the table. He has put the stain on and never wiped it off and he just did everything wrong and he thinks he’s doing it correctly. He should not be doing any work for any one."

Since 1923, we manufacture, refinishing, restoration, reupholstering, custom furniture & sales, bent glass, beveled mirrors & leather tops, & caning. Come and see our restored antiques, antique reproductions, and genuine Capodimonte lamps and giftware from Italy. Solve your heirloom and antique problems with complete restoration. We do not fix, repair or reupholster motion furniture or recliners as well as upholstery, spring, and leather repairs. Bring back the original character of your old masterpieces. Period furniture is our specialty, but not our limitation. Removers and strippers can damage the luster and character of the wood. At Montalbano these are never used. Instead we use a specially formulated thinner to completely dissolve the old finish as if it never existed. The item is then taken apart as necessary, re-glued, repaired, completely hand sanded and prepared for its new twelve step finish which is second to none. We are specialists in water, fire and insurance work. We offer free factory estimates and home estimates are available. Pickup and delivery is available. Our other services offered include; leather replacement and bent glass doors, caning as well as expert reupholstering with our 10,000 piece fabric gallery. Manufacture, refinishing, restoration, reupholstering, custom furniture & sales, bent glass, beveled mirrors & leather tops, & caning. We also reglue, repair, and reupholster kitchen and dining room chairs, including animal damage- ie chew marks in the wood. We have changed location so kindly call and make an appointment to look at your needs. We are not always onsite. No mechanical, electrical, motion, rips, and tear repairs.

"Professional and well done. Handled furniture with care. Good selection of materials for reupholstering. Picked up and delivered the eight dining room chairs promptly, professionally and courteously."

Furniture Reupholstery questions, answered by experts

As with any project, weighing the pros and cons of upholstery can help determine if that is the right choice for you. The ultimate question is whether it’s worth reupholstering instead of buying new furniture. Here are a few of the benefits and disadvantages of reupholstering a piece of furniture.

Pros:

  • Preserving a family heirloom

  • Maintaining high-quality furniture in good condition

  • Reinventing an old piece of furniture

  • Keeping a piece of furniture from going to a landfill

Cons:

  • Spending (possibly) more than to buy a new piece of furniture

  • Finding out the frame is beyond repair

  • Waiting for the reupholstery work to be done

Regular vacuuming, spot cleaning, and protecting surfaces from sun exposure prevents wear and fading, preserving longevity.

Furniture reupholstery costs vary based on many factors, but most projects cost between $350 and $1,100, with an average price of $700 per piece. Some factors that affect the price of furniture reupholstery include:

  • Size of the piece

  • Current condition of the material

  • Materials used

  • Age of your furniture

  • Additional furniture repairs

  • Number of pieces of furniture

  • Your location and whether or not the work is done on-site

On average, the cost to reupholster furniture is about $720 per piece. However the price range to upholster a piece of furniture varies widely from about $380 to $1,150 or more, depending on the material type and availability, repairs needed, and the complexity of the project. Fabric costs typically range from $50 to $70 per yard while the cost of labor runs from $40 to $100 per hour.

To safeguard your furniture and upholstered items, it's best to use plastic wrap or specially-made plastic sofa covers. However, you should avoid wrapping wooden furniture in plastic if you plan on storing it, as plastic can trap moisture and warp the wood, plus it may damage certain finishes. In either case, old blankets or moving blankets make excellent alternatives. For protecting delicate glass table tops and mirrors, bubble wrap is always a reliable choice.
