"The provider claimed he was doing the procedure correctly by sanding, just one spot and putting stain over the area. He refused to completely sand, the whole table, and just claimed by putting a second coat of stain, it would look fine. He did not have any tools or sandpaper with him and asked us for some sandpaper . I inquired about sanding the whole table and he kept insisting that it was fine that he only sanded the spots that had crazy glue drop on it. I said he needed to sand the whole table and he just sat there and argued with me. He argued with me so much. I told him to go and leave the project. We called him after a few days and we requested our money back that he did not complete the job. He said he could do it the way I wanted it done by sanding the whole table. We gave him another chance to correct his work. He came out and worked on the table for two hours. He sanded 1/2 of the table and spots on the other half of the table, he did not sand the two inserts that also belong to the table. Then he proceeded to stain all pieces whether they were sanded or they were not sanded. He put stain over the old stain and said that that was fine, he had used a little steel wool to rough it up. and then he stained the half of the apron because he couldn’t see the top of the whole apron. He sloppily corrected a nick in the table and said it was fine. Everything he touched on the table made the table worse, I told him to stop working on it and leave and I wanted my money back. He refuses to give my money back. He does not know what he’s doing. He lied about his ability. He’s an old man that is not all with it in the brain. He thinks he wants to come back and try to fix it some more. I am not letting him touch my table. On further inspection he has sanded out the routed edge of the table. He has put the stain on and never wiped it off and he just did everything wrong and he thinks he’s doing it correctly. He should not be doing any work for any one."

Since 1923, we manufacture, refinishing, restoration, reupholstering, custom furniture & sales, bent glass, beveled mirrors & leather tops, & caning. Come and see our restored antiques, antique reproductions, and genuine Capodimonte lamps and giftware from Italy. Solve your heirloom and antique problems with complete restoration. Handyman business operating in Arlington Heights and the surround communities offering both senior and veteran discounts. I've always enjoyed working with my hands. When I was a little kid I was always taking apart things around the house, fortunately I was always able to put them back together. As I got older I took every shop class in high-school and when I joined the Army it was as a mechanic. I did take a 25 year detour as a designer in corporate America, however my joy was always working with my hands. Now I'm ready to make that my full time job and I'm hoping I can do that by working for you on whatever you may need help with. I've posted some samples of my work, but there is a whole lot more. Please feel free to message me at any time and I'll be glad to get the ball rolling on your next project.

"Clint was on time and quick to repair our wooden handrail. He also refinished my mother's 50 year old cedar chest and it turned out beautiful."

FAQs for furniture reupholstery projects in Barrington, IL

The cost to refinish wood furniture ranges widely, depending on the size and type of furniture. Here’s what you can expect to pay to refinish the following wood furniture items:

  • Table: $150–$700

  • Dining chair: $100–$400

  • Rocking chair: $200–$500

  • Bar stool: $100–$250

  • China cabinet or armoire: $500–$3,500

  • Dining set: $1,000–$3,000

  • Coffee table: $150–$800

  • Dresser: $300–$2,000

  • Bed: $350–$2,000

  • Pool table: $300–$600

  • Kitchen cabinets: $1,800–$5,000

As with any project, weighing the pros and cons of upholstery can help determine if that is the right choice for you. The ultimate question is whether it’s worth reupholstering instead of buying new furniture. Here are a few of the benefits and disadvantages of reupholstering a piece of furniture.

Pros:

  • Preserving a family heirloom

  • Maintaining high-quality furniture in good condition

  • Reinventing an old piece of furniture

  • Keeping a piece of furniture from going to a landfill

Cons:

  • Spending (possibly) more than to buy a new piece of furniture

  • Finding out the frame is beyond repair

  • Waiting for the reupholstery work to be done

It can be cheaper to reupholster a chair or other piece of furniture than to buy a new one, depending on how much it costs to replace. If the chair or couch originally cost less than $300, then reupholstery may not be the cheapest option. However, if the chair is expensive, vintage, or discontinued, reupholstery can be the more affordable option. This is especially true if the piece of furniture is out-of-production or holds sentimental value.

On average, the cost to reupholster furniture is about $720 per piece. However the price range to upholster a piece of furniture varies widely from about $380 to $1,150 or more, depending on the material type and availability, repairs needed, and the complexity of the project. Fabric costs typically range from $50 to $70 per yard while the cost of labor runs from $40 to $100 per hour.

The cost to refinish a table is about $250, depending on the size, type of finish, and amount of detail involved in the table and the new finish. The lowest price to refinish a table is about $80, and the highest is about $700. Additional tasks like dipping, stripping, staining, and painting will add to the total project cost. Here are average costs to refinish a table by type:

  • Side or end table: $80–$150

  • Coffee table: $150–$250

  • Dining room table: $400–$700
