"Paul from PSP came to do the job and was freaking awesome. He found the issue quickly and explained what was needed. The plumber that was out yesterday couldn't get this done. I'm grateful for Paul and adding PSP to my contacts to use at my business for any further plumbing needs."

Customers say: True professional

"The plumbing on the lower level of my place went haywire a couple of weeks ago and there was a smelly overflow of water coming out of the drain where my furnace and hot water heater drained condensation.  I called Charlie in a bit of a panic and left a message.  I waited a couple of hours and called back, and he picked up to let me know he was working on another job and would call me back.  Charlie called back around 9:30pm and told me that the issue is most likely related to my sump pump.  I told Charlie I had to leave for work at a certain time the next day so he said he could come over in the morning.  In the meanwhile, he told me not to run any water on the lower level.
When Charlie came over, he checked the electrical connection first, which was fine, and eventually found out that the sump pump had died.  So right away, he ran out to grab a new one and came back quickly to begin replacing the pump.  When he tested the new sump pump, it still didn't work, and he ended up finding a clog in the pipes.  He fixed that issue right away.  Charlie finished right by the time I had to leave for work.
Throughout the process, he took the time to explain what he was doing and gave me some tips along the way, which was much appreciated by this first time home buyer.  It was nice to experience someone so thorough and nice... Plus, Charlie gave me a good price on the services.  It's nice to know he's close by, too.  I'd give him a call again if I ran into any other plumbing issues.

"We were extremely please with Chris. We approached the project with baby steps. After an initial jet & camera of our current drain & floor tile we learned we had a blockage (which is why in heavy rains we were getting water & mud coming up). We then hired him to open a section of concrete to expose the drain tile and fix. This lead to the exposing a serious problem and we went further and had Chris replace the drain tile, add a new sump pump & tie into existing to create a "back up". Although it ended up costing us about $9,000 we are at complete ease knowing our basement is dry now! We will only be calling Aqua Doctor for any of our plumbing issues in the future."

Sump Pump Installation questions, answered by experts

A small sump pump running infrequently uses an average of 10 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity per month. The average cost for electricity is $0.171 per kWh. The size and use frequency affect how much electricity it uses. Sump pumps average one-third to one horsepower (hp) motors. One hp is equal to 745.7 watts. Watts multiplied by the time your pump is running divided by 1,000 equals your average kWh. Multiply kWh by your average cost of electricity. In areas with high rain or a marsh basin, the average cost can be as high as $15-$25 a month.

A sump pump's lifespan is typically 7 to 10 years, though the general range can be anywhere from 5 to 15 years. The specific type of pump is a major factor: pedestal sump pumps last an average of 20 to 25 years, whereas submersible sump pumps last between 5 and 15 years. While pedestal pumps are less expensive to service, they are also louder and more prone to clogging.

Several other factors influence longevity, including the pump's quality, usage frequency, and maintenance schedule. A high-quality pump that is well-maintained in a dry climate may last for two decades, while a lower-quality, poorly maintained pump in an area with a high water table or frequent flooding may fail in six years or less.

Regular maintenance, including annual inspections and tuneups from a professional, can significantly extend the pump's life. It is time to consider a replacement if your sump pump runs constantly, cycles frequently, shows visible rust or corrosion, or trips a circuit breaker. As a preventative measure, many homeowners replace their pumps every eight years. It's also worth noting that a manufacturer's warranty can indicate expected lifespan, and some home insurance policies may not cover water damage from a pump that is past its recommended replacement date.

A sump pump battery backup can typically run for 6 to 24 hours. The factors that affect its runtime include the battery capacity and pump usage.

When purchasing your backup system, take these factors into consideration to determine which system is best for your home. If you live in an area with frequent and long-lasting power outages, consider a longer-lasting backup battery.

Test regularly, clean the pump, and inspect the discharge line to ensure efficient operation.

Installing a battery backup for your sump pump is recommended, particularly if you live in an area with frequent power outages or severe rainstorms. A sump pump requires electricity to function, and a battery backup ensures it can continue to move water out of your home if the power goes out, providing crucial protection against flooding. Additionally, frequent power outages can create electrical surges that might damage the sump pump's motor. A battery backup system offers an additional layer of protection, ensuring your basement stays dry.
