"We had our chimney tuck pointed and a roof put on the house. The old roof wasn’t torn down this it wasn’t in real bad shape and there was only one layer on. The work was all done in one day and everything was cleaned up when they left."

"I hired Belmont to repair a covered deck where one corner had sagged. The owner, Adam, was quick to provide an estimate. His estimate was detailed and showed that he understood the root cause (concrete block footing vs 42" pier now required under code). I agreed with his repair approach. Adam and his team did a great job on the repair, there were no surprises and deck and roof are now level. His main carpenter Ivan was especially good, meticulous. I am very happy with Belmont and would hire them again."

"Frank and his crew did a wonderful job of removing our outdoor carpeting and staining and sealing the concrete on our porch. Frank is very skilled and professional, willing to explain everything, and very helpful with tips to save money. He wants to make sure his customers are satisfied. When I asked, he gave me help and suggestions on staining cabinets. I expect to hire him to do some painting in the future for us."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can build a deck over your outdoor HVAC unit, but you need to leave at least 5 feet of vertical clearance above the unit. If you don’t want your deck to be that high off the ground, you could build a floating deck in another part of your yard—again, as long as you leave at least 4 feet of horizontal space between the deck and your AC unit.

What goes under your floating deck depends on your preferences. Some homeowners put landscaping fabric underneath their decks to prevent weeds from popping up through the boards. Others choose to build a floating deck over grass or gravel. However, it’s best not to set your deck directly on the ground. Instead, set your deck on blocks to keep it elevated enough to prevent moisture from rotting the wood.

Both deck footings and deck posts help prop up your deck. However, footings are the bottommost parts of a deck that touch the ground. They’re usually made of concrete. Posts are pieces of wood that attach to the top of the footings with brackets. They run upwards and connect to the underside of your deck to support its weight.

Most building codes require that spindles or balusters on deck and stair railings be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard, often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' is designed to prevent small children or pets from slipping through the railing. A good way to visualize this is that a 4-inch sphere should not be able to pass between two spindles. For the same safety reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck floor should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is crucial to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

Because adding a deck will yield a higher property value, you may have higher insurance costs. It’s important to follow the codes and regulations set by your local and state governments, so your insurance rates can be properly calculated. You may need an insurance revaluation after your deck is completed. The best course of action is to speak with an insurance professional to understand how adding a deck will impact your home’s insurance costs before you begin.
