Kelly and Michelle Langel, owners of The Spa Shop, started their business servicing spas and hot tubs in 1994. Their repair based business spanned across northern Illinois, helping customers from the Iowa border to downtown Chicago. After 10 years and numerous customer requests, a retail location was opened in 2004. The Spa Shop carries a wide variety of hot tub components including jets, pillows, filters, covers, and chemicals. Only the highest quality and locally built tubs are sold and displayed in the showroom. They have since expanded to offer swimming pool accessories, covers, and chemicals as well. Customer service is an integral factor in how the Langels run their business. When the technicians at The Spa Shop go out to perform spa or pool service, they do more than just install parts and leave. The knowledgeable staff will take the time to make sure their work is exceptional, as well as answer any questions you may have. The same can be expected for the services offered in-store. The highly trained sales staff will walk you through any issues you may be experiencing with your pool or spa and advise you on how to make your water safe and enjoyable for use. The Gas Guy offers over seventeen years of natural gas safety and experience. Professional sub-contractor for The Fireworks of Rockford and The Great Escape.

"Chris did a fantastic job. He was able to work me in on a Saturday two weeks earlier from his original date. Not only did he connect the line to the meter, also dug the trench for the line. Very professional, knowledgeable, and accommodating. Will be my go to guy for future gas installs or repairs."

Pool and Spa Servicing questions, answered by experts

Using bubble bath, bath oils, bath salts, or moisturizing products that contain butters or oils can damage your jetted tub. Because of the water pump and jet mechanism, you need to be more selective with products for a jetted tub than you would for a traditional bathtub in order to keep it functioning properly and avoid expensive repairs. These products also leave residue that can feed mildew and mold, so it’s best to avoid them.

Hot tub repairs cost between $200 and $500 on average. You can minimize those costs by maintaining your hot tub and keeping necessary supplies on hand. An elevated shelf in the garage is a great place to store your water care chemicals so that kids and pets will stay safe and you’ll always have them around.

Your hot tub should be drained of existing water, cleaned, and refilled every three to four months at a minimum. Follow your tub manufacturer’s recommendations for cleaning, and rinse thoroughly when finished to eliminate any residue from the cleaning products. This is also a good time to inspect your tub’s cover in good lighting for any leaks, tears, or other damage that might cause problems.

Using your hot tub manufacturer’s suggested cleaners and methods, keep your hot tub filters clean to avoid a loss of water heat. This will help extend the filter’s useful life and efficiency. If the filter is more than two to three years old, replace it with a new one and buy a second filter to keep around as a spare.

You should keep your hot tub at a constant soaking temperature of around 100 degrees Fahrenheit when the hot tub is not in use. However, you can lower that by a couple of degrees during the summer, so you don’t feel overheated.

Most hot tubs use between 1,500 watts and 6,000 watts of electricity, depending on the voltage of your heater. 120-volt heaters tip toward the low end, and 240-volt heaters tip toward the high end. Expect your pump to add another 1,500 watts. Newer, energy-efficient models use less electricity, while older models use more.

When your hot tub is completely dry, there is typically no need to introduce antifreeze into the plumbing. However, if you desire an extra layer of protection against potential freeze damage, you can consider adding some RV antifreeze to your hot tub lines. Just ensure that you use RV antifreeze specifically, as automotive antifreeze is highly toxic and should be avoided.
