Kelly and Michelle Langel, owners of The Spa Shop, started their business servicing spas and hot tubs in 1994. Their repair based business spanned across northern Illinois, helping customers from the Iowa border to downtown Chicago. After 10 years and numerous customer requests, a retail location was opened in 2004. The Spa Shop carries a wide variety of hot tub components including jets, pillows, filters, covers, and chemicals. Only the highest quality and locally built tubs are sold and displayed in the showroom. They have since expanded to offer swimming pool accessories, covers, and chemicals as well. Customer service is an integral factor in how the Langels run their business. When the technicians at The Spa Shop go out to perform spa or pool service, they do more than just install parts and leave. The knowledgeable staff will take the time to make sure their work is exceptional, as well as answer any questions you may have. The same can be expected for the services offered in-store. The highly trained sales staff will walk you through any issues you may be experiencing with your pool or spa and advise you on how to make your water safe and enjoyable for use. Pool and Spa Servicing questions, answered by experts

Follow these general safety tips for spas and hot tubs:

  • Keep your exterior electrical receptacles covered and dry, especially around your hot tub and pool during periods of use.

  • Make sure you have a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) properly installed to ensure no one gets accidentally shocked or injured by electrocution.

  • Don’t use the hot tub or your pool during a thunderstorm.

  • Before using the hot tub, have a certified electrician thoroughly inspect your hot tub and its wiring to make sure you’re in full compliance with all applicable local building codes.

Regular water testing, filter cleaning, and chemical balancing are essential for keeping water clean and equipment functional.

Most hot tubs use between 1,500 watts and 6,000 watts of electricity, depending on the voltage of your heater. 120-volt heaters tip toward the low end, and 240-volt heaters tip toward the high end. Expect your pump to add another 1,500 watts. Newer, energy-efficient models use less electricity, while older models use more.

For a fully-foamed hot tub, freezing typically occurs when the temperature drops below 28 degrees Fahrenheit and remains at or below this level continuously for a minimum of 36 hours. If your hot tub and pumps are still operational, however, the water circulates, and this continuous movement helps prevent freezing, even in very cold conditions. This circulation, along with the insulation provided by the foam, helps maintain the water temperature and prevent it from freezing during extended cold periods. Still, if you’re not planning to run it regularly, be sure to winterize the hot tub properly to prevent damage from freezing.

If you want to have a chemical-free spa, or if you are wondering how to keep your hot tub clean naturally, there are several options. Some individuals choose to run their hot tub without treatment at all and simply clean it more often (although you risk bacteria, fungi, and algae growth if you take this route); others use natural products like vinegar or Borax. Ozone, ultraviolet light, and electrolysis systems are also eco-friendly ways to have a clean hot tub without chemicals. Saltwater hot tubs are popular with people who are sensitive to chlorine, bromine, and other traditional hot tub chemicals.
