Kelly and Michelle Langel, owners of The Spa Shop, started their business servicing spas and hot tubs in 1994. Their repair based business spanned across northern Illinois, helping customers from the Iowa border to downtown Chicago. After 10 years and numerous customer requests, a retail location was opened in 2004. The Spa Shop carries a wide variety of hot tub components including jets, pillows, filters, covers, and chemicals. Only the highest quality and locally built tubs are sold and displayed in the showroom. They have since expanded to offer swimming pool accessories, covers, and chemicals as well. Customer service is an integral factor in how the Langels run their business. When the technicians at The Spa Shop go out to perform spa or pool service, they do more than just install parts and leave. The knowledgeable staff will take the time to make sure their work is exceptional, as well as answer any questions you may have. The same can be expected for the services offered in-store. The highly trained sales staff will walk you through any issues you may be experiencing with your pool or spa and advise you on how to make your water safe and enjoyable for use. Call or stop in today to experience the joy and satisfaction of working with a small town business that really cares about you!

Pool and Spa Servicing questions, answered by experts

You should keep your hot tub at a constant soaking temperature of around 100 degrees Fahrenheit when the hot tub is not in use. However, you can lower that by a couple of degrees during the summer, so you don’t feel overheated.

You should put chlorine in your hot tub on a regular basis. To keep bacteria away, keep the chlorine level in your hot tub at between 3-5 mg/l, which may mean you need to add chlorine daily or at least every two to three days. Don’t add chlorine to your hot tub water more than once per day.

Shocking your hot tub means adding extra chemicals to the water. Most spa experts recommend doing this once a week for proper hot tub maintenance, but you can do it more if needed. Shocking has multiple benefits, including preventing the water from becoming murky and it’s essential in removing harmful bacteria from the water.

It’s easy to keep your hot tub clean and safe for all to enjoy by following a few simple tips:

  • Make sure anyone who uses the hot tub rinses themselves and their swimsuits off, perhaps in an outdoor shower near the hot tub.

  • Don’t add anything to your hot tub’s water. Bath oils and bubble bath liquids might seem like a fun addition to your hot tub experience, but these substances will turn the water in your tub foamy and its surfaces hard to clean.

  • Restrict eating in the tub to light snacks that you can easily clean out if there’s any spillage. Crumbs from crackers and chips can be difficult to pick up.

  • Make it a no-pet zone. Pet fur and dander can pose a cleaning issue, but it’s also not a great idea for your pet’s health and safety.

You’ll know you need to replace the pump in your hot tub if you hear loud or unusual noises when the machine is running or notice a significant decrease in water pressure. A leak or altogether failure of the hot tub may also indicate a problem with the pump, but you’ll need a professional to investigate the source of the issue.
