"Nick of Modern Landscape was the only one of three companies sent to us by Home Advisor who called promptly and came out when he said he would. His bid was about $1,000 less than the other two we got. We were very pleased with the end result, especially the curved corners at every turn in our walkway (which required a lot of extra paver cutting), which look good and increase the safety of walking to our garage and the front gate of our courtyard. All of the workers were courteous, and they did a very good job. Our only tiny little complaint was that they showed up to start working the first day with no real notice, but we plan to use them for future projects."

"James did a great job for us building a wall. From start to finish he was here when he said he would be and finished on time even with a few speed bumps in the middle. Non of his own doing I might say. Thank you James you are on the top of my list for the next project. Trent"

"Jake and his StraightLine Design family did a full exterior remodel on our North End Boise home. The result is an amazing 1910 home that has been restored to near-original condition. StraightLine did the roof, gutters, siding, and windows. They sourced period appropriate wood siding and shingles and we could not be happier with the project. Jake at StraightLine is incredibly responsive 24/7 and handled all challenges with utmost professionalism and attention to detail. Honestly, the StraightLine team is 5-star and I highly recommend them for any project!"

"Chris was recommended to us by a friend and neighbor. He remodeled both of our bathrooms and our kitchen. Chris and his team did a FABULOUS job! Very professional, well thought out and cleaned up daily. Also, the work was completed on time. I call Chris for EVERYTHING. He repaired the roof in barn, replaced a pressure tank in our shop and many, many projects around our house. If Chris is out of town and I have a problem, he has a referral that can come and take care of it. Love Chris and team and we will ONLY hire them. Lynn and Doug Lessa"

Barndominium Builders questions, answered by experts

The lifespan of a barn is typically 40 to 60 years, but with skillful construction and proper maintenance, it can last up to 100 years. The actual lifespan depends on several factors, including the barn type, materials, usage, and climate. For example, the posts of a pole barn should last 50 years or longer, but if the structure is used for livestock in a rainy climate, it may rot within the first decade. Custom designs with high-end materials tend to last the longest. To get the best estimate for your barn's lifespan, you should consider its material type and intended use.

It is almost always more affordable to buy an existing home than to build a new one. Building a home involves numerous costs, including labor, permits, inspections, utility hookups, and brand-new materials, finishes, and appliances. Additionally, new construction loans can have higher interest rates than traditional mortgages, and property taxes on new homes are often higher, increasing long-term costs. An exception is a DIY house build, which can be cheaper than buying an existing home if you do the labor yourself. While building is generally more expensive, a new custom home offers complete control over the layout and design. Furthermore, new construction is typically worth more than a comparable pre-owned home and may provide a better return on investment if sold quickly.

While prices fluctuate because of increased demand, fewer supplies, and engineering time, OSB generally remains more affordable than plywood at $1 to $2.40 per square foot compared to the $4.50 to $10 for plywood. Cost is only one factor you should consider when deciding between OSB and plywood.

While building a treehouse isn’t necessarily a death sentence, damaging the trunk is one of the ways to kill a tree. If you’re concerned about the tree, opt for a treehouse support system rather than attaching it directly to the trunk. This may involve using bolts and brackets to affix the structure to the tree's branches or establishing a standalone support system that remains unattached to the tree.

Pole barns and carports are similar in that they rely on posts for support and are often not connected to a primary structure. The main difference between the two is that pole barns usually include walls that surround the entire perimeter of the structure, while carports generally remain open on three or four sides. It’s possible to insulate garage doors and even exterior walls on pole barns to create a comfortable workspace, and it’s a bit more secure for storage purposes. However, carports are more affordable.
