Small jobs welcome

"I highly recommend Alan. Not only did he do an excellent job of installing my new, unfinished slab mahogany 3/4 lite exterior door between my kitchen and dining room and installing my clear crystal glass interior mortise door knob on the door, but he also did an excellent job of staining and clear coating the door. I am so happy and pleased with the beautiful results! I was very fortunate that Alan has the skills and experience to complete my door project. Some of the companies that I called only install doors. I am grateful that I didnâ t have to hire 2 different people- one to install the door, one to stain the door. Alanâ s carpentry, craftsmanship and staining skills are outstanding. He pays attention to detail and puts a lot of care in his work. On Friday, 5/10/19, I originally made an online appointment to see Alan on Monday, 5/13/19. However, on Friday, 5/10/19, when I tried to call Alan, I was so lucky to reach him and he was able to come out right away to look at my door! I was so happy that Alan was able to install my door on the following Wednesday, 5/15/19! Before installing the door, Alan placed the door on a table on the sidewalk in front of my house. He sanded and planed the door at that location so that there would be no wood dust in the house. He carefully measured and checked before installing the door, the door knob, mortise lock and hinges. After Alan installed the door, he cleaned the sidewalk and inside work area. At a later date, Alan returned to remove the door and he took it with him to stain. First, he removed the door hardware and left that in the house. After Alan was finished applying 1 coat of Old Masters Oil Based Wood Conditioner Clear 50104 and 5 coats of Varathane Ultimate Polyurethane Water Based Interior Crystal Clear Satin, sanding between coats with 150-160 fine grit sandpaper and wiping the dust off the door, he arranged a convenient time to return to re-install the door and door hardware. Alan is very pleasant, helpful, accommodating, approachable, trustworthy and easy to work with. As a senior with a limited budget, I really appreciated that Alan was willing to work with me to meet my budget. Also, he graciously helped me by filling in 2 holes in my wood floor where the new door was installed. It was truly a pleasure meeting Alan. I will hire him again for future carpentry projects and I will definitely recommend him to family and friends. Alan, many thanks for a job well done!"

"James did a great job for us building a wall. From start to finish he was here when he said he would be and finished on time even with a few speed bumps in the middle. Non of his own doing I might say. Thank you James you are on the top of my list for the next project. Trent"

"I had R.U.S.S Custom Builds come out and do a framing job for me. First off, the customer service and overall interaction with me as a client was on point. We got together, figured everything out and got straight to work. Russ is a hard working man who will get the job done right and and do it to the best of his abilities. He treats his customers fairly and with respect. Highly recommend him to anyone looking to get an amazing, high quality job done!"

"River City Handyman Service remodeled two bathrooms from outdated and drab to bathrooms that could easily be in House Beautiful Magazine or seen on HGTV. He replaced the countertops in my kitchen and built a gorgeous wooden bar top to replace the ugly grey Formica counter that separates the kitchen from the living room. He built a pergola in my backyard; All the projects were done to my complete satisfaction within the time frame promised, and without cutting corners. He is pleasant and friendly, yet professional to the last nail he pounds in. I would highly recommend River City Handyman to anyone looking for quality work that is reasonably priced."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

The average cost of DIY window framing is about $40 to $60 in materials. If you hire a window treatment professional, you’ll pay for materials plus labor costs—anywhere from $250 to $800 per window. The final cost is highly dependent on the window size, as larger windows are heavier and more difficult to install, as well as the type of window framing material.

Not all porch columns are load-bearing, though they can be. Some porch columns are simply decorative. There are ways to identify a load-bearing column, like looking for visible seams and a foundation. Also, check to see if the column directly enters the ground. In some porch installations, a contractor will excavate a hole to install a column into the earth along with a buried cement base for stability.

While framing a basement is not as difficult as finishing a basement, it's something you should typically leave to the pros. That’s because if something is installed correctly, it will affect your entire basement. However, you can take care of some of the smaller tasks, like filling holes or putting up some insulation.

Installing a tongue-and-groove wall requires similar techniques to those associated with installing shiplap. However, because of the precision necessary to make each board fit perfectly and the increased material prices, the cost is higher than that of shiplap installations. Expect to spend between $2 and $6 more per square foot for tongue-and-groove walls versus shiplap ones.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.
