"They were very knowledgeable! They explained everything I needed to know about owning a water softener and how to maintain it. They also gave me several options for brand and grain capacity which was helpful. They installed it within 30- min. And the manager made sure to come after to double check the work. Very highly recommended!!!"

"The Customer Service Rep evaluated my old softner and determined it was not repairable without a lot of work and he wasn't sure he could get the parts. (Sears Water Softner) He mentioned that they sold a good brand of Sofners and suggested one that would do the job for us. I bought a new softner from them and he came back and installed it that afternoon. I'm very pleased with the advise and decision."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

Drinking hard water is not known to have any negative health impacts. Using hard water can lead to dry skin and hair, and the minerals in hard water can build up in pipes, faucets, and appliances. Hard water is more of a threat to your plumbing than it is to your health.

If your water softener repair is fairly straightforward, like a simple filter replacement, then you can probably do it yourself with little risk. However, anything beyond a simple fix should be addressed by someone with extensive plumbing expertise to avoid costly water softener problems, like leaks.

That said, even simple problems can be complicated to diagnose, particularly if your water softener is attached to a whole-house treatment system. So, unless you feel absolutely certain that the problem is an easy fix that you can take on yourself, it's probably best to hire a plumber to diagnose and fix the problem.

The most accurate way to determine whether you have hard water is to purchase a water test kit from a hardware store or send a tap water sample to a lab. But there are some signs you can look out for without professional testing. For instance, if you're consistently dealing with mineral stains on your glassware, windows, and shower doors, you're likely to have hard water. Hard water can also make it harder to lather and rinse soap, so if you're struggling to work up a good lather in the shower, hard water might be the culprit.

Hard water is not considered unhealthy and is safe to drink, cook with, and bathe in. It doesn't pose a risk to your physical health and can even help you get enough essential minerals like calcium in your diet. However, it can negatively affect skin and hair. Using hard water for washing can contribute to dry skin, an itchy scalp, and may worsen conditions like eczema by altering the pH balance. Additionally, some people do not like the taste of hard water.

The average cost to install a water softener, including the system and labor, is approximately $1,500. However, the total price can range widely from $600 to $6,000. For some complete systems, the cost may be between $800 and $2,500. Labor for the installation typically costs between $150 and $1,000.

The final price is influenced by several factors, including:

  • System type, capacity, and complexity

  • Home size and household water demands

  • Water hardness levels

  • Accessibility of the installation site and the extent of plumbing work required

  • Whether new electrical work is needed

  • The professional hired and any local permit costs
