"I called Space Coast Electric to fix an open ground issue in one of my bedrooms. They arrived on schedule. They found and fixed it for a reasonable price. They also did other miscellaneous electrical things for me while they were here. Great job. I recommend them."

"Outstanding. I noticed the other day that my front porch light had dropped out of the recessed receptacle and was hanging by its wires. I quickly contacted several electricians from Angie's list and only heard back from two of them. Both were pleasant and helpful. One could not get to me for about 7-9 days. The other (Phaze Electric) had me on their schedule the next day. Jerome showed up early and quickly assessed what was needed. He obtained the necessary part from Lowe's and was back in a flash to remove the old housing and install the new one. I also used Phaze Electric a couple of years ago to hang ceiling fans on my back porch and they did an excellent job then, too. Phaze Electric will be the company I call in the future for all my electrical needs. I trust them to do a great job at a reasonable price."

Customers say: Quality work

"I am very pleased with the work Paul did rewiring my electrical panel. He is extremely knowledgeable and takes a great deal of pride in his work. He was very good at communicating his schedule and always showed up exactly when he said he would. The more information he shared with me (he explains every step he takes in the process), the more confident I felt in his work. Always cleaned up after himself too. I did some research about cost and everything he told me was spot on. His pricing and charging policy is beyond fair. I recommend him highly and will call him for any of my future electrical work or just advise on the subject. Additionally, he noticed I had as spot for a smoke detector in an inconvenient place in my house. He volunteered to get one for me that included a carbon monoxide sensor and installed it for me. Great job!"

Electrical questions, answered by experts

The standard copper wire gauge to use with any 30-amp circuit is a 10-gauge wire. The National Electric Code specifies a 10-gauge wire with appliances like water heaters running on 30 amps. If you try to use a smaller gauge wire, such as a 12 gauge, with a 30-amp breaker, you run the risk of the wire overheating and melting or causing a fire. Because of the safety hazards, the gauge of the wire is not an area to try to cut costs when connecting a 30-amp breaker to a water heater.

A breaker won’t always trip if an outlet burns out. If the outlet is overloaded or has a short circuit, the breaker is designed to trip and discontinue power to the outlet. However, some wiring problems that can burn out an outlet may not cause the breaker to trip, so don’t rely on it as a signal that something is wrong.

Poorly designed and incorrectly installed outlets can create an electrical fire hazard, as do some phone chargers and adapters that plug into these outlets. However, most outlets are perfectly safe as long as they remain in working condition. Keep an eye on what you are plugging into the outlet and stay alert for signs of outlet malfunction, like sparks, burning smell, or frequent circuit tripping.

GFCI outlets should be clearly labeled with LINE and LOAD labels, with arrows leading to the proper terminals. The line terminals are typically at the top, and the load terminals are typically at the bottom.

If the electrical wires you’re working with are too short, one of the easiest ways to elongate it is to extend them with a push-in connector. These user-friendly tools help you splice two wires together with little fuss or the need for extra tools, like a crimping tool, which is an older way of extending wires. As long as you can stripe the ends of a wire, using a push-in connector shouldn’t be an issue.
