"Eric is terrific. We had a burning smell when using our dryer and thought it might be our electrical box. He thoroughly check out the breakers then looked at our dryer which is not something they normally do. He found it, and the dryer line, was full of lint. He replaced the dryer line, cleaned out all the lint, vacuumed and got us straightened out. Above the "call of duty". He also came out the same day we called. He probably saved us from a house fire. This company is terrific."

"They return calls promptly and schedule very soon. They were always there when they indicated and continued to follow up on everything on our long list of renovation lighting and electrical needs. They were diligent in finding a problem with our wiring that was causing trouble with a ceiling fan. We are very satisfied with our experience and will use them again when we need help."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

No, a ceiling fan doesn’t have to be wired to a switch, but it’s often more convenient. You can use the included pull chain if your ceiling isn’t too high or install a remote module later, as they are a cheap, easy-to-install option that’ll let you control both the fan and light fixture.

A standard three-prong electrical outlet typically lasts for about 15 years with normal use and should be replaced accordingly. GFCI outlets may have a longer lifespan of 15 to 25 years. While some outlets can last longer if used infrequently, they can also fail prematurely. Reasons for early failure include poor wiring, an overloaded circuit, improper grounding or installation, or loose plugs. Signs that an outlet is failing include flickering lights, overheating, a discolored or melted faceplate, plugs that fall out easily, or frequently tripping circuit breakers. It is essential to address faulty outlets promptly to avoid safety hazards, especially in homes older than 15 years.

Yes, a dead outlet can be dangerous and may cause a fire. The lack of power can be due to a hazardous electrical issue that poses a fire risk. If you notice a burning smell, discoloration, or sparks from a non-working outlet, it is a serious issue. It is vital to have a professional electrician investigate and fix the problem as soon as possible.

A full home inspection can cost nearly $350 on average, but inspecting the breaker box specifically is likely to be lower, between $100 and $200. Don’t confuse this service with a basic breaker trip check, which doesn’t take long and is usually billed at $40 to $50 per hour.

If the electrician discovers a serious problem and needs to replace a breaker, it can cost between $100 and $200 in additional expenses. Although rare, replacing the electrical panel typically costs between $500 and $2,000.

If you’re outlet isn’t working but the breaker isn’t tripped , that could mean a number of things. First, check if it’s a GFCI outlet, which has added protection so your breakers don’t malfunction. If that’s the case, simply hit the outlet's reset button and see if it works. If it doesn’t, or you don’t have a GFCI outlet, you might have a loose outlet or loose wiring, a damaged breaker, or an overloaded circuit, which would require a dedicated breaker. It’s best to consult with an electrician to diagnose the problem accurately.
