"Replaced drywall in some inconvenient areas. Both were efficient and careful with our home and possessions...could be described as masterful in placing the mud covering. Do ask about their other capabilities. We found their quote for materials and labor to be reasonable."

"Absolutely the best! Worked very diligently, did not leave any mess. Did an amazing job with my “to do” list which was everything from replacing high hats, plumbing, electrical outlets updated, installing new outside coach lights, patching a drywall hole and more. He even stayed an extra hour to finish and only asked for an extra $10. He said he CB couldn't leave a job unfinished! Total professional, a man who enjoys his work and more importantly does it well. I will use him again."

"We contracted Heber for our master and hallway bathroom remodel. We liked his work so much as he is very helpful and provides a fair price. We gave him the job to install the tile in our four bedrooms rooms as well. They did a fantastic job and helped with everything we needed. We will definitely use them again. If you use these guys you will always get more than what you pay for. Thank you Heber!!!!!!!!!!"

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Drying alone can take 1 to 4 hours to dry to the touch per plaster layer, but some types of plaster take several hours longer to dry. However, this doesn’t mean the job is done because plaster doesn’t fully harden until it cures, which can take a few days to a couple of weeks. It may take even longer if you’re building a new, pretty thick plaster wall. Allow the plaster to cure before painting it.

Yes, it matters which side of drywall you use. One side is smooth, and the other is rough. The smooth side should be facing outward, toward the room, while the rough side should be hidden and facing the studs and framing of the house. The smooth side will be easier to apply tape, joint compound, and, later, paint to.

All plaster walls will crack over time due to normal house settling and expansion and contraction from temperature and moisture changes. Small, thin hairline cracks are generally not serious and are mostly a cosmetic issue. However, larger or more significant cracks can indicate structural problems.

Here's how to tell the difference:

  • Cosmetic Cracks: Cracks that are 0.5 cm (0.2 inches) or thinner are typically cosmetic.

  • Structural Cracks: Cracks wider than 0.5 cm, excessive or deep cracks, multiple cracks in the same area, or cracks that span around corners can signify a structural or foundation issue. Cracks along the joints where walls meet the ceiling also warrant attention.

For cracks wider than 0.5 cm, structural repair is needed. If a crack is 2.5 cm (1 inch) or wider, or if you notice any signs of a structural problem, it is best to contact a plaster repair professional to assess the damage.

Yes, you can apply new plaster over an existing plaster surface, such as a wall or ceiling, provided the old plaster is in good condition. Before you begin, check the stability of the existing plaster. The surface must be clean, free of loose material, and have no peeling paint. It is also recommended to roughen the surface slightly to promote adhesion. For older plaster, applying a base coat like a PVA emulsion or a specific bonding agent or primer is crucial. This step makes the existing plaster less porous and ensures the new and old layers adhere properly for a smooth, long-lasting finish.

The best tool for skim coating drywall is a skim coating blade, which can smooth out joint compound in wide stretches. While you could use a smaller drywall knife for skim coating, the smaller size means it’ll take longer to smooth out each section. Instead, consider investing in a skim coating blade for the quickest application.
