"First, let me say that I am incredibly hard to please when it comes to construction and/or remodeling work. I have built houses myself and have been hands-on in every aspect of that except for pouring concrete. When a roofer messed up one part of the new roof install causing the front bedroom of the house to flood with rain just two hours after I bought the house, and every day there after until they found the caused and fixed what they missed, I found myself in the hunt for someone who could do drywall, painting, and flooring. I found CBA Contracting on Angi’s List and was hesitant, but I was in a new area where I didn’t know any talent. I met Chris of CBA Contracting, and after spending some time talking with him, I hired him. He was FABULOUS! He is very good at those tasks he takes on, does what he says he’s going to do, shows up (very important!) when he says he will, is polite and courteous, has respect for your home and minimizes messes, and cleans up very well at the end of each day. His work is impeccable; he is a perfectionist. I was so pleased with the work he did on that water damaged room that I hired him to lay floors in the other two bedrooms. I am thrilled that I have found someone who meets my high standards when it comes to remodeling/construction work; that’s very rare. I’m getting too old to spend the days on my knees laying floors day after day. I will surely have more remodeling jobs, and Chris will be the first person I call. Chris’s price was more than fair, and remember, you get what you pay for. The cheapest bid isn’t always the best decision, and often it’s a bad decision. I learned that decades ago, and I’ve been through a lot of subcontractors in my lifetime. Chris is the very best, by far, that I’ve found."

"I have known and hired Jim R. since about 2006. He knows plastering. He has done many different-sized jobs for me: Big and Small. It is probably the smaller ones that I appreciate the most - because not everyone puts as much effort into it as Jim does. I would recommend National Plastering for just about any stucco job you have got!"

Plaster Repair questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can apply new plaster over an existing plaster surface, such as a wall or ceiling, provided the old plaster is in good condition. Before you begin, check the stability of the existing plaster. The surface must be clean, free of loose material, and have no peeling paint. It is also recommended to roughen the surface slightly to promote adhesion. For older plaster, applying a base coat like a PVA emulsion or a specific bonding agent or primer is crucial. This step makes the existing plaster less porous and ensures the new and old layers adhere properly for a smooth, long-lasting finish.

Generally, your homeowner’s insurance might only cover ceiling collapses caused by problems under the coverage, such as a busted pipe. But if the ceiling collapse resulted from owner negligence, maintenance issues, or other reasons excluded by your policy, you could be on your own. Some policies might cover damages caused by the collapse but not the repair itself. Check with your policy carrier for the most accurate information regarding ceiling collapse coverage.

If your home was built before the 1940s and was not remodeled in the past 50 or so years, you probably have plaster walls. Aside from assuming, there are some practical ways to tell if you have plaster walls, including the following: If you knock on the wall and it feels solid, not hollow, if you can’t insert a thumbtack easily, if there are cracks that look like spiderwebs, or if your home has curved, arched, or swirled walls, doorways, or window openings.

If you have an unfinished basement or attic, you could examine the backs of any finished walls to check, too.

While you should consult with a ceiling professional for larger cracks, especially if you’re not sure what’s causing your ceiling to crack, you can certainly try to repair small cracks on your own. If you’re up for the task, here’s how to repair ceiling cracks for $150 or less.

Yes, you can speed up the time it takes for plaster to dry, but it's important to do so carefully to avoid issues like cracking or crumbling. Proper ventilation is key; open a window or use a fan to circulate air in the room. Heat can also accelerate drying, but be cautious, as too much heat can cause the plaster to dry too quickly and crack. Check the plaster's packaging for the recommended drying temperature and set the room's thermostat accordingly. While managing humidity is important, avoid using a dehumidifier, which can remove moisture too aggressively and result in crumbly plaster.
