"I hired Bill to remodel my bathroom. He did a complete rip out down to the studs. I had him remove the tub and install a new shower. He installed the drywall and all the tile and fixtures I picked. It doesn’t matter which way you lay drywall, and you can choose to install it horizontally or vertically depending on the size of the wall and how tall the ceiling is. It’s easier to lay drywall sheets vertically if you have a taller ceiling, but laying sheets horizontally makes it easier to apply joint compound.

You can skim coat plaster, but it’s better to repair the plaster itself. A skim coat is a thin coat of drywall joint compound spread over the surface of a wall. The result is a flat finish that looks pleasing, but part of the appeal of plaster is its imperfections and aesthetic. Skim coating is best when limited to drywall applications.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

Whether you apply the drywall mesh before or after drywall mud depends on the type of patch it is. For self-adhesive patches, you’ll put the patch down first and then coat it with mud. Mesh patches that are not self-adhesive will require you to put mud down first and then press the mesh into it, followed by additional coats of mud.

You should not leave drywall outside, especially overnight or in a wet, humid climate. Exposure to rain and humidity can damage the drywall, weakening its structural integrity and making it susceptible to mold growth. If you must leave drywall outside during a project, be sure to cover it with a tarp or keep it inside a storage shed to protect it. Even drywall intended for exterior projects requires a protective moisture barrier. For best results, store any extra drywall in a dry area away from the elements.
