Small jobs welcome

"Replaced drywall in some inconvenient areas. Both were efficient and careful with our home and possessions...could be described as masterful in placing the mud covering. Do ask about their other capabilities. We found their quote for materials and labor to be reasonable."

"Juan Rocha and his workers at Generation Contractor LLC, replaced drywall which was removed by a mold remediation company, after a roof leak. Juan promptly answered my phone calls and texts throughout the entire process. He and his workers always arrived on time and worked diligently to repair the damage in my room. They laid a plastic sheeting on my carpeted floor and covered furniture to minimize clean-up. Juan and his workers are very friendly, polite and respectful. They did a wonderful job repairing and replacing the drywall on my wall and ceiling, and finished ahead of schedule. Juan’s fee was reasonable and fair. I will definitely call on Juan at Generation Contractor in the future because of their promptness, politeness, and outstanding workmanship."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Yes, it matters which side of drywall you use. One side is smooth, and the other is rough. The smooth side should be facing outward, toward the room, while the rough side should be hidden and facing the studs and framing of the house. The smooth side will be easier to apply tape, joint compound, and, later, paint to.

Costs range from $500 to $5,000, depending on damage size, labor, and finishing requirements.

If you’re installing new drywall, you may need to skim coat the drywall first for a smooth finish and to allow the primer to adhere to the wall. It’s only necessary if there are imperfections in your drywall due to issues with the studs or improper drywall installation. If you’re refreshing existing walls, you may want to skim coat if there are imperfections across the wall. As an alternative, you can repair your drywall and sand it for a smooth finish before painting.

It’s highly recommended to use studs for a TV mount. The last thing you want is to be watching your favorite show when the TV falls off the wall. Studs are much stronger than drywall and quite a bit stronger than drywall anchors but, if you can’t find the studs or there simply aren’t any where you need them, you can use drywall anchors. It’s extremely important to make sure the anchors are rated for the load of the TV. We recommend using anchors that are rated far beyond the weight of whatever you’re hanging. Our suggestion is metal drywall toggle anchors.

There are six levels of drywall finish, from 0 to 5, that refer to the amount of work performed during the finishing process.

Level 0: Drywall is hung with no finishing work.

Level 1: Tape is placed over the seams between drywall sheets.

Level 2: A thin layer of mud is applied over the tape and screw holes. This level is common for utility rooms or walls that will be covered.

Level 3: A full coat of mud covers the screw holes and tape, but the surface is not sanded. This is often used in garages.

Level 4: This is the most common finish for visible interior walls. It involves applying two coats of mud over seams and screw holes, with sanding between each coat, creating a smooth surface ready for flat paint.

Level 5: This is a high-end finish for luxury homes. It includes full taping, mudding, and sanding, plus a final skim coat over the entire surface before painting.
