"Fan motor is making noise intermittently. I decided not to replace it at the moment. Whenever it breakdowns we have decided to call Professor Cool to replace the A/C unit since is so old. Danny was honest and did not try to sell us a new unit. He will be our new A/C guy from now on."

"We hired Sears Home Pro for Vinyl Siding installation. The salesman who came out is their sub company for Transform Home Improvements, who now do all of Sears work. The salesman came out, and gave a quote for 23k for siding job. We said send the estimate via email and we would discuss it that night. We received the quote and it was now over 26k. I called and texted and the salesman decided to act confused and then stopped answering. I contacted them at their 1800 number and an online salesperson found the quote and gave it to us for 23k. We signed the contract and paid them. The stated only 30% would be withdrawn from our account the the last 70% upon completion. They withdrew 100% of the funds. The salesperson then never responded via email or phone calls when I attempted to contact her about this. I was able to get a hold of the Florida head of sales there and he said he would get it taken care of. About a week and a half later we received a check for the 70% to be refunded. I still had yet to hear from anyone about getting the job done yet and it had been a month. The local office does not have anyone there to answer any of the calls and even the folks at the 1800 number could not get a hold of anyone there. Eventually after about another week of trying, a manager contacted me and said we need to do another measurement to make sure we have everything correct and for you to sign forms for the permits to be pulled. I said they could come anytime and leave the forms at the house when I got home to fill out after work. I never heard anything or got any forms for a week after the workers date he was going to come out. I got a hold of the manager again and he stated he could not do out home because it was a stilt home and that makes your home 3 levels. I was like what? You all had measurements and pics of my home from the first day the salesman was out here. This is 8 weeks after we sent in money and all the other mishaps. So then I had to call their corporate office and complain and try to get my 30% of funds back. 2 weeks later a check arrived. So 10 weeks and they held up this job from happening and had the worst communication, and also had my money tied up for over 2 months for nothing. Do not use them! Sears is not a good provider anymore now that they have to sub it out to Transform Home Improvements."

FAQs for heating and air conditioning service projects in Tampa, FL

Knowing how long your existing HVAC units can last is essential to determine if you need a repair or replacement. Typically, most modern air conditioning units can last between 15 to 20 years, and most furnaces can work properly for 15 to 30 years. If your HVAC system is on the older side and you decide to replace one unit, it might make sense to replace both simultaneously to save on costs and future hassle.

While different HVAC contractors might offer higher or lower prices than competitors, the best time to replace your HVAC system is when customer demand is low. The beginning of summer and the beginning of winter bring the most demand for HVAC systems, so if you can, consider replacing your HVAC units in the early spring or fall. Many HVAC companies offer special off-season coupons that help lower the overall cost.

The average cost to hire an HVAC contractor is between $50 and $150 per hour if charging hourly. However, some HVAC contractors will charge a flat fee by the type of service they are performing—for example, an inspection can cost between $150 to $500. Keep in mind that emergency repairs—which are made after business hours or around major holidays—generally cost more than scheduled repairs.

Yes, most states require HVAC technicians to be certified, and for good reason. Hiring an unlicensed HVAC technician could lead to poor quality work, costly future expenses, and potential code violations.

As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:

  • The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check

  • Required to have applicable state and local licenses

  • Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review

  • Paying to advertise their services

  • Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi

Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.

The average cost of HVAC repairs is around $350. However, that price can be as low as $100 or as high as $2,000 or more, depending on the repair. For example, replacing a capacitor is a relatively inexpensive repair, ranging from $100 to $500. However, a compressor repair is a more expensive repair, ranging from $750 to $2,000.
