Professor cool

Fan motor is making noise intermittently. I decided not to replace it at the moment. Whenever it breakdowns we have decided to call Professor Cool to replace the A/C unit since is so old. Danny was honest and did not try to sell us a new unit. He will be our new A/C guy from now on.

I messaged with the owner before having them come out because the first company who came out sent someone who had little to no experience with gas furnaces, and who thought they all had electronic ignitions (mine is really old, but still works well). Owner said he would send his partner, Rob, because he came from the Northeast and had lots of experience with gas furnaces. Rob was punctual, polite, and knew exactly what he was doing. Previous company told me I needed to at least replace the thermostat, which I did. Rob even tested my old one for me, found it functioned fine, reinstalled it, and after he replaced the thermocouple, my heater works fine, as does the thermostat. He did not try to convince me to replace the entire system as the previous company had. Rob went right to work, quickly diagnosed the problem, and had it repaired, all within an hour. He explained exactly what he was doing and why, and more about how the gas furnace works.

Danny was one of five firms that I interviewed for my central air conditioner replacement. Of the five, he was the only one to make pressure measurements in the plenum, which justified his making the recommendation of enlarging the plenum. Two others made the same recommendation, but only by eyeballing the system. Danny also asked about how we used the system, what our favorite temperatures were, and what the main factor in wanting to update a working system was (in our case, better dehumidification). He recommended at 4-Ton, 16 SEER, single speed compressor, with a variable speed air handler. He went over in detail why we he thought we needed a 16 SEER over a 15 SEER, and why he thought we did not need the expense of a 2-speed or variable speed compressor over a single speed compressor. His quote was the lowest of the five, but I chose him primarily for his ability to communicate and educate, and also for him being the only one who included enlarging the two return ducts, which added 2 hours to the installation. He has 20 years of experience as an installer before recently opening his own business, and his experience and knowledge shows. Of the five people who came by to quote, he was the only one who actually did the installation himself, with his business partner. In my online research, a clear message is that the company that makes the system is not as important as the installation, and Danny did an excellent job installing. It took the two of them ten hours to remove the old condenser and air handler, install the new condenser over a new hurricane-rated pad, put in a new "coffin box" for the air handler to sit on, build a new pair of plenums, take care and time with the duct sealing using multiple layers of fiberglass tape, metal duct tape, and coating it with mastic outer layer. They did a thorough cleanup job, and will return when the temperature is at least 70 degrees to adjust the final level of refrigerant. A lesser company would have added refrigerant at the end of the installation, even though the room temperature was only 64 degrees, which would have resulted in an inaccurate filling. I can not say enough about the professionalism of this company, in addition to their low price, along with the usual guarantees and a year of free service.

This is a phenomenal, local company. Rob and Danny are both really good at explaining what is going on, and they even asked me to climb onto the roof where the compressor is and showed me what was happening. Can't get better service than these guys, and they have definitely gained my trust. Also they will beat anybody's prices. They gave me a quote nearly half the amount of another company (but that company was definitely trying to rip me off). If you have any issues with HVAC, these are the guys to go to! Found this company through a friend, not disappointed! Danny arrived promptly on time as scheduled, went through a thorough checklist and was most professional. He even took the time to explain the benefit of keeping the filter clean and suggested a specific filter for the allergy season. The price was less than the other estimates I got for the same service. I will definitely use Professor Cool again.
