"1st Choice Water Solutions completed the repairs to my sprinkler system, including replacing nine sprinkler heads and the control panel. Plus they adjusted and verified that the other sprinkler heads were functioning and covering the areas that needed watering. Earl and his wife did an outstanding job for us, they were very timely in responding to my request and completed our project in record time. Their price was extremely fair and they completed our project the same day as they gave us the estimate (on a Sunday, no less). We will definitely hire them again and we did... They are going to add two more zones to our sprinkler system. We are very happy customers!!!"

"I have used them twice before and had been happy with their responsiveness and quality of their work. This time I was given 4 different delivery times and I had to keep calling on the day they were supposed to install and get the status. Prices started at $1230, then went to $1690.00 on the phone when it was discovered I needed a power vent. Took a week to get the water heater delivered and then after they installed it I was presented for a bill for $2200.00. When I called and asked why the price went up, they said the price of the water heater went up since I ordered it a week ago. No one called to let me know that the price had changed. We settled for $1800 still $110 over what was quoted. The plumbers were very good, respectful and professional. It is a shame that the office staff doesn't reflect the their plumbers' excellent qualities."

"Ken and Danny did a fantastic job of installing a whole home water treatment for our townhome. Ken explained everything throughly and Danny installed it all within half a day. Carbon filter, UV Light, and Reverse Osmosis system for under the kitchen sink. I added on a replacement water heater as well since the old one was on expired time in my opinion. I would absolutely recommend this team to anyone because of their honesty, professionalism and work ethics."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

Installing a water softener could help reduce calcium buildup in your pool if your pool has high calcium hardness as a result of hard drinking water in your home. Pool softeners work by exchanging calcium and magnesium for sodium, so if you use softened water to top off your pool, it may help keep calcium hardness from rising over time. However, it won’t lower the calcium hardness of the water already in your pool and isn’t a practical way to control pool calcium levels. The average water softener installation cost is between $200 and $6,000.

Most of the U.S. has hard water, especially across portions of the West and Midwest. The areas with the hardest water include parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Illinois, North and South Dakota, Ohio, and New York. You’ll find soft water in parts of New England, the Southeast, the Pacific Northwest, and Hawaii.

The primary difference between a water softener and a water filter lies in what they remove from the water. A water softener is designed to remove hard minerals like calcium and magnesium. In contrast, a water filter has a broader effect, removing various contaminants above a certain size, which can include bacteria and other impurities.

To decide which you need, consider your goal. If you want to eliminate hard minerals, choose a softener. If you want to remove a wide range of contaminants, a filter is the better option. Filters are also generally less expensive to install. Depending on your water supply, you may need to install both for comprehensive treatment.

While not everyone can detect taste differences in high-calcium water, water that has a slightly metallic taste probably has too much calcium.

There are several things that can shorten the life of a water softener. Homes with very hard water may have to replace the unit sooner because the water softener works harder to filter out the hard minerals. High water usage and infrequent maintenance can also put more strain on a water softener.
