"Andrew was a professional. His communication was good and he was fairly priced. Only glitch was not knowing stuff wouldn't be hauled away until next day, but in the end that did not pose an issue to the building of the new ramp. I would hire Andrew again."

"Darryl worked only part of each of the 5 days he was here. He left to go get supplies and then ended his day about noon. He left to do another job when there were still 2 items on my list stating that my job took longer than expected. If he had come early and worked later everything could have been finished. He told me the weather was going to be bad, which it wasnt and he said he would play it by ear,; as to when he will get back to me. That is unacceptable to me. I cleared my schedule to be here and my time was not respected."

"My experience with Artisan Millwork Installation and Design Corp. was top notch. Marcelo Chaves arrived on time, worked tirelessly to finish the project in one day (staying until 7 PM) and left the area spotless. The cabinets look great, are beautifully aligned and very well constructed. I'm very pleased with the work."

"Marku Construction is FANTASTIC! A few years ago we converted our 3 bedroom house into a 2 bedroom. But now, when we want to sell, the realtor convinced us to switch it back. I called Marku Construction and Ari came out the same morning to look at the job. Our timeline was short but he was able to fit us in within a few days. The job entailed removing french doors, rebuilding the wall to split the large room in half, framing/installing two bedroom doors, baseboards, & molding, and painting everything to match! Ari and his crew did an excellent job and for a great price. They were in and out in 2 days and left the job spotless. They even left the place super clean when they were going to be back in the morning. I would recommend Marku Construction for any job they took on. Attention to detail, professionalism, and great communication are just a few of the reasons why. And our realtor is thrilled to have his contact information as well!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Removing a load-bearing wall is best handled by professionals. However, if you have the skill set and decide to DIY the project, you will still need at least one additional person to assist you. Aside from helping with demolition, you'll need another hand to install the new support beam.

Installing a tongue-and-groove wall requires similar techniques to those associated with installing shiplap. However, because of the precision necessary to make each board fit perfectly and the increased material prices, the cost is higher than that of shiplap installations. Expect to spend between $2 and $6 more per square foot for tongue-and-groove walls versus shiplap ones.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

Yes, using certified lumber and engineered wood products for reduced environmental impact.

While framing a basement is not as difficult as finishing a basement, it's something you should typically leave to the pros. That’s because if something is installed correctly, it will affect your entire basement. However, you can take care of some of the smaller tasks, like filling holes or putting up some insulation.
