Small jobs welcome

"Jim was great! He came to inspect our new house for mold and give advice on cleaning the air. While using his infra red gadget he found several spots throughout our duct work with leaks of cold air. After cutting out a wall to explore we found the main trunk of the duct work was disconnected! We added insulation to all the areas he saw the leaks and now itâ s a brisk 74° in the house! This saved us thousands of dollars because we were ready to get a new AC system!"

"Called H&W and they were very courteous on the phone. Waylon sent out Scott right baway and he was at my house within an hour. He was helpful, pleasant and professional and got our AC thawed and working again. $100: $75 standard service visit charge plus $25 for the work he did. Cheaper than the hotel room we would have booked to get out of the hot house! I will use them again. They treated me like a priority during a hot summer season when most other AC companies are overbooked and super busy and treat you like they don't need your business. Thanks, Waylon and Scott!"

"Have had a few return issues following new installation. Initially new unit worked. Next day it didn't and tech returned quickly to fix (new thermostat needed). Next day worked. Following day it wouldn't blow cold air. The tech returned quickly (main drain not initially flushed and was clogged). Has been working ever since however all rooms do not cool easily which admittedly could be other issues like insulation."

"The work they did was great! But I cannot give them 5 stars because of how expensive they were. I have a mini-split and already had it mounted and had an electrician hook everything up. They just had to come out and hook up the AC portion. It took them a little more than 60 minutes and they charged me $1,800. I felt like they had me over a barrel and I said, so, if I do not pay you $1,800, then I cannot use my AC, so what choice do I have? The price seemed extreme. I spoke to my uncle, who is a plumber and had installed mini-splits before (he was actually visiting and on vacation, and he would have done it if he had his equipment), he too thought the price was outrageous considering all of the electrical was already done. If you do not mind paying an arm and a leg, then they really do fine work and the guys that came out were very pleasant. But I felt like they saw that I had no choice and they could charge me whatever they wanted. I know I could have gotten a second quote, and maybe I should have, but I simply wanted to get it hooked up and be done with it. Unfortunately, I have had the same experience with other maintenance/construction type work, where an electrician charged me $600 to install 10 dimmer switches... something I could do myself for $50 in materials and in about an hour... there definitely seems to be something going around where price gouging is the thing right now... not sure... anyhow... that is my review."

"I was most pleased by the responsiveness of the business. I scheduled an appointment for 10/4 to estimate replacement costs and immediately received an email confirmation from their representative (Chad Johnson) with his cell number on it. I had questions so I called his cell number and he immediately came to my house, gave me a price, and I accepted the offer because it was a good price but primarily because of Chad's responsiveness. The installers came in the morning of 10/4 and by noon I had an operating mini-split unit. So instead of an estimate on 10/4, the job was completed on 10/4!! Great work -- I highly recommend them!"

Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Window ACs use 500 to 1,400 watts per hour of electricity, while mini-splits use 500 to 700 watts per hour. However, if you need to cool multiple zones in your house, your mini-split can use as much as 2,000 watts per hour. How often you run your system will impact how much electricity you use (and how much you pay per month).

On a summer day, expect your AC to run between 12 and 16 hours. However, this time frame depends on just how hot it is outside and the comfortable temperature you’re hoping to maintain indoors. Assuming the size of your AC is appropriate for the space you’re trying to cool, it shouldn’t be a problem for it to work this many hours.

Yes, you can clean AC coils yourself. Just make sure that the power to your AC system is off before you begin. You’ll need some basic tools and supplies, including a soft brush, cloth, screwdriver, and a commercial or homemade cleaning solution. Cleaning your coils will only cost about $10.

Air conditioners and dehumidifiers are actually quite similar, though they perform different jobs. Dehumidifiers reduce moisture in the air, while air conditioners work to cool the home. A good central AC unit will naturally perform a certain level of dehumidification due to its design, but it will not be able to handle excessive levels of moisture.

Traditional central air conditioning systems require ductwork to circulate air throughout the home. Alternatively, you can add air conditioning with a mini-split ductless air conditioning system, which can be just as energy efficient as a central air conditioner. This type of system consists of two units–an outside unit that holds the compressor and condenser and an indoor unit that holds an air-handler. With multi-zone ductless systems, there are multiple indoor air handlers tied to a single outdoor compressor/condenser, allowing the system to cool multiple rooms.
