  • Freezing temperatures: The water sitting in your spigot over winter can freeze, expand, and lead to damage and leaks.

  • High water pressure: High water pressure is hard on pipes over time and can cause cracks and leaks, too.

A shower cartridge is a component located inside the shower valve. While the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, they are two different parts. The shower valve is the entire device that regulates the flow and temperature of water in your shower. The cartridge is the inner part of the valve that connects to the shower controls, allowing you to adjust the water's temperature and flow by balancing the mix of hot and cold water. While the signs of a failing valve and cartridge can be similar, if you are experiencing issues with water temperature, you may need to replace the entire valve.

To measure pipe size, you can use a ruler, a soft tape measure, or a caliper. You can find a special pipe caliper that has iron or copper pipe sizes already marked. Rulers work if the end of the pipe is exposed. If your pipe is still attached to the plumbing, you’ll need to go for a soft tape measure or caliper.

A standard toilet flange should fit snugly into the outflow pipe and sit level with the subfloor. Installing a new one without first removing the old one will make it impossible to form a seal and keep the toilet bowl bolted securely in place. 

However, if you’re dealing with leakage or wobbling because you’ve installed a new type of bathroom tile (making the floor taller), you may be able to avoid fully replacing the flange by opting for a toilet flange extender. Extenders typically come in kits for easy DIY installation, fit over the existing flange, and bring the drain connection higher.
