"They started each day at 8:00 AM and worked until 5:00 or later. They were very polite and professional. The lead person George would explain what they would be doing each day and then perform the tasks. The deck looks like it is brand new and the redwood has the original color and grain. Note: the bill included 4 hours of setting the deck screws so they could sand. Otherwise they performed to the bid."

"Excellent job. Omar was courteous, considerate and very professional. We were concerned about the plants along the walls but he took extra measures to ensure none of them were damaged. The best decision we have ever made was to go with Green Oak Painting."

"Needed my deck sealed after a year of curing. Quote was high, but I decided it was worth it. Lots of positive reviews. Had some water marks from pots on the deck. After the first brightening there were still watermarks. I sent Bruce pictures and asked that the guys coming to seal make sure the watermarks were taken care of. He told me to point out the spots and they would take care of it. When the sealers came, I pointed out the marks and asked that they make sure they were taken care of before the sealing. They told me that the water marks were the result of leaving pots on the deck...duh. Obviously this is what happened, but was why I was paying Cal Preserving to take care of it. I don't appreciate having to convince my contractors I want something done the right way. I ended up calling Bruce and explaining that I felt like this was being done in a rush, but he assured me his team was professional and that it would get done properly. Placated, I decided to trust it would be OK, despite the static. That was my first mistake. After they were done sealing they asked for the check (before it had a chance to dry and for me to inspect the work). I told Bruce I didn't feel comfortable with this (over the phone), but he reassured me that they weren't that kind of company and any mistakes or issues would be taken care of. I gave the sealers the check. Mistake number 2. The next day I inspected the work to find huge sections of the hand rail completely unsealed and with power-washer damage. Also the water marks were still there and now sealed in. I took pictures and sent them to Bruce. He came out and we discussed the issues. He was nice and told me not to worry and that his guys would take care of it. Another iteration and the handrail was fixed, but the watermarks are still there. At this point I feel like I didn't get the full value of what I paid, and the hassle I went through to get to where I am now, which is barely passable should be avoided by others so I am writing this review. I don't mind paying premium prices, but when I do, I expect premium work. And if I find something wrong with the work, I expect it to be fixed without contention. The fact is I feel like the job was rushed, and I was pressured into paying early. I am a relatively new homeowner and this whole experience has just been a lesson learned. If the watermarks were taken care of, and the rail done right the first time, and nobody gave me static, I would be rating Cal Preserving with five stars. Take warning!"

"Jeremy with RSJ was professional and helpful from start to finish. With helping choose colors with my wife to ideas of how to white wash or exterior brick. He kept us informed every step of the process and even help with some dry rot we had. The end result was a 10 out of 10. We had our entire exterior painted, including our gutters, garage door and even white washing the brick around the front and chimney. The price was amazing as well. I got 4 estimates and I am stoked I chose RSJ. They did such a great job we had him do an entire wing of our office that we remodeled. Highly recommended!!!"

Customers say: True professional

"I have worked with Ceres Construction on multiple residential projects that have spanned several years in duration. Adrian is one of the most reliable and upstanding contractors I have worked with in Marin and his attention to quality is rare. Our first project was a historic home in Mill Valley where Adrian and team built my children a treehouse that’s right out of a storybook nestled into a large tree. Next he rebuilt several decks/railings, re-sided our ADU, and installed new outdoor electrical. At our next home in San Anselmo, we called Ceres to completely rebuild a large outdoor deck that leaked and caused damage to the living spaces below. We also had them prep the house for sale by replacing banisters, remodeling the kitchen, and finishing the garage. We purchased a very old home that needed lots of work while maintaining the charm. Ceres worked for 18 months and handled everything from foundations to plumbing to drywall. You name it, they can do it all. Best in the business."

"TM did an awesome job painting all the interior walls of our home. They painted 8 rooms and 2 bathrooms in two days which exceeded our expectations. Their work quality is excellent and they moved and protected our furniture and floors to prevent any paint damage. Also did a thorough clean up after the painting was completed. We highly recommended them."

"I recently had the pleasure of working with Prestige Custom Painters, and I couldn't be more impressed with the results. From start to finish, their attention to detail was unparalleled. Victor, the owner, made communication a breeze. He was always responsive and followed up promptly, which made the whole process seamless. His supervisor, Jesus, and the entire team were incredibly professional throughout the job. The task at hand was a complex one—painting my three-story building with a mix of stucco, wood, and cement shingle siding. The restoration of the original wood window trim, which had been neglected for over 100 years, was a major concern. The trim had significant warping and pitting, but after Prestige's work, it looks as though it's brand new. They also took the time to extensively caulk everything, ensuring a smooth, flawless finish. Another highlight was their meticulous approach to protecting the surrounding areas. They covered the windows and work areas with tarps and plastic, preventing any potential damage. Additionally, they cleaned up daily and did so more thoroughly than other subcontractors I've worked with. I would highly recommend Prestige Custom Painters to anyone looking for quality craftsmanship and a team that truly cares about their work. It was a pleasure working with them, and the final results speak for themselves!"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Yes, staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan, typically by five to 10 years. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it can still fall victim to moisture, sun exposure, and rot over time. Applying a treatment creates a protective shield that helps prevent splintering, fading, and decay, preserving the wood's strength and appearance. A combination stain and sealer often provides the best protection, as it soaks into the wood grain rather than just sitting on top. This offers superior defense against UV damage and rot and lasts longer than a sealer alone. To maintain the wood's natural look, consider using a near-translucent stain. You should plan to reapply the stain or sealer every two to three years.

Staining pressure-treated wood is a recommended practice. While inherently resilient, it's not impervious to moisture and UV exposure. Staining treated wood is feasible and recommended for enhanced protection and longevity. Applying stain and sealant safeguards against degradation, prolonging its life span. These measures shield the wood from environmental threats while augmenting its aesthetic appeal, ensuring your investment endures the test of time.

Whether to paint or stain a deck depends on your personal preference for appearance and budget. Stain provides a natural look with a range of undertones, is typically less expensive, and may only require one coat, but it does not last as long as paint. Paint offers a sleeker finish with a virtually unlimited color palette. Both options will protect your deck from outdoor elements like rain, snow, and general wear and tear.

Yes, you can waterproof any wood that has not already been treated. A good way to test this is to splash some water on it. If the water starts to bead up, the wood is treated and most likely doesn’t need another coating.

Applying too much sealer to a deck might seem like extra protection, but it can cause more harm than good. Wood is a porous material with a limited capacity to absorb liquids. When you go overboard with sealer, the excess can't soak in and instead forms a film on the surface. This leftover layer is prone to peeling, cracking, and trapping moisture, ultimately defeating the purpose of sealing in the first place.
