"CalPreserving was the total deal! I didn't know what all we needed and all the serves Iooked at seemed to offer only a piece of the puzzle, such as just power washing, or construction, or staining. This group did it all. The initial visit to assess the issues was informative and helpful. We could see our choices. They offered sound advice and looked at ways to save us money where it was possible. We ended up replacing about half the boards on the oldest deck. The finished product on both decks looks amazing -- like new. The workmen were thoughtful, knowledgeable, hard working, and polite. I was impressed that they even followed up with tips on maintaining the decks for years to come. I will definitely have them back every couple of years just to check on the decks and preserve the investments we have made in them. My highest recommendation."

"Needed my deck sealed after a year of curing. Quote was high, but I decided it was worth it. Lots of positive reviews. Had some water marks from pots on the deck. After the first brightening there were still watermarks. I sent Bruce pictures and asked that the guys coming to seal make sure the watermarks were taken care of. He told me to point out the spots and they would take care of it. When the sealers came, I pointed out the marks and asked that they make sure they were taken care of before the sealing. They told me that the water marks were the result of leaving pots on the deck...duh. Obviously this is what happened, but was why I was paying Cal Preserving to take care of it. I don't appreciate having to convince my contractors I want something done the right way. I ended up calling Bruce and explaining that I felt like this was being done in a rush, but he assured me his team was professional and that it would get done properly. Placated, I decided to trust it would be OK, despite the static. That was my first mistake. After they were done sealing they asked for the check (before it had a chance to dry and for me to inspect the work). I told Bruce I didn't feel comfortable with this (over the phone), but he reassured me that they weren't that kind of company and any mistakes or issues would be taken care of. I gave the sealers the check. Mistake number 2. The next day I inspected the work to find huge sections of the hand rail completely unsealed and with power-washer damage. Also the water marks were still there and now sealed in. I took pictures and sent them to Bruce. He came out and we discussed the issues. He was nice and told me not to worry and that his guys would take care of it. Another iteration and the handrail was fixed, but the watermarks are still there. At this point I feel like I didn't get the full value of what I paid, and the hassle I went through to get to where I am now, which is barely passable should be avoided by others so I am writing this review. I don't mind paying premium prices, but when I do, I expect premium work. And if I find something wrong with the work, I expect it to be fixed without contention. The fact is I feel like the job was rushed, and I was pressured into paying early. I am a relatively new homeowner and this whole experience has just been a lesson learned. If the watermarks were taken care of, and the rail done right the first time, and nobody gave me static, I would be rating Cal Preserving with five stars. Take warning!"

"Luis and his crew did a great job for us. We had them paint our kitchen and bathroom. We were staying here while the work was going on. Always respectful and unobtrusive. In addition to the painting they refinished and sealed our large deck. Taking extra care with all the prep work. 5 Stars! Definitely my first call the next time we need a painter"

"We did a major home renovation that involved hiring 11 contractors. Juan at GM Painting was within our top 2. It is a real opportunity to work with him right now because his work is excellent, and he is growing his business, providing service way beyond his price point. Highlights include: - Quality of work. Completely dedicated to excellence. Initial consultation included artsy ideas like making accent walls, knowledge on what colors go together and the provision of color palettes to help make decisions. Juan has great eyes and can spot imperfections we could not see, which he fixed up. He genuinely wanted us just to love our space and help make it look as good as possible. He also retouched many shots after we moved in and dinged the walls. - Multiple skills. Juan painted our interior walls, finished the wooden stair posts and banisters, refinished 100 year old doors that has been painted a few too many times, and noticed that our basement was unfinished concrete. He epoxy coated the basement for us, the best value improvement to our finish work. One of our contractors also dinged a bathroom vanity. I asked him to help with this and he made it like new, doing big gouges with wood filler and matching with stain and finish. - Customer service. Impeccable. Juan is one of the most thoughtful people we have met. Communicates very clearly, cares about people, very kind and lovely to work with. - Price. Unbeatable for the service offered. Presumably his prices can't stay at this point forever. He gave one of our lower bids while providing service beyond this price point. A real opportunity for anyone looking for a painter. We can't recommend GM Painting more highly."

"From beginning through completion Gene exceeded my expectations. I normally do all my own work, but due to my schedule I did not have time to compete the project. Gene arrived when he said he would to give me an estimate. The price and scope of work were reasonable and fair. We set a start date. The night before I received a text to confirm. At 8:00 AM The door bell rang. They were here. The gentleman who pressure washed they house did a great job. Even cleaned the stairs and sidewalk. The paint crew also arrived on time. They did a super job. Clean and quick. Those guys worked really hard during some hot, smokey weather. The place looks great."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Wood stain does go bad, but it will last in the can for between three and six years, provided you use proper storage techniques. Storing wood stain in open containers or in extremely low or high temperatures will cause your wood stain to become unusable much more quickly. Water- and latex-based wood stains typically last for just two to four years, while oil-based wood stains can last for three to six years.

The number of coats you need to apply when whitewashing a surface depends on how opaque you want the final product to be. If you're going for a transparent, barely there look, a single coat or two may suffice. For fuller coverage, you'll want to use multiple coats. Another option is to use a less diluted paint to get a thicker coverage.

Pressure-treated wood lasts at least 10 years, but with the right care and treatment, it can last as long as 40 years. Painting the boards is one way to increase the lifespan of pressure-treated wood. The layer of paint provides extra protection for the wood against the exterior elements and insects.

The best time to paint your deck is when temperatures are neither too cold (below 60 degrees) nor too hot (above 85 degrees). Always paint your deck when there’s no risk of rain. For fast-drying paint like acrylic or latex, ensure your deck can dry for at least four hours. Oil-based paints take longer to dry and may require 48 hours to completely cure.

Wood stain is not flammable after it dries. The solvent in wood stain is what causes the liquid form to be highly flammable, but the stain drying process involves the solvents dissolving, which leaves behind a non-flammable product on your wood project. Wood stain is, however, flammable before you apply it, so you should always store partially full cans and used wood stain rags away from sources of heat and open flames.
