"We hired Juan for our kitchen backsplash and floor tile installation on our kitchen upgrade project. We ended up hiring him for cabinet, countertop, and range hood installation, too! Juan and his team were absolutely wonderful to work with. He was prompt, professional, and an excellent communicator. His work and commitment to getting it right came through every day, and he has a very collaborative style. His advice gave us confidence in the decisions we were making about materials and installation. Because our home is 100 years old and has many quirks, we had a few surprises along the way. Tile—specifically smaller, mosaic-style tiles—is the best type of flooring for building a walk-in shower base. Shower pans come with a threshold and sidewalls to contain the water, but tile can be set into the shower base. This creates a walk-in shower floor that gently slopes toward the drain to keep water from getting out and into the rest of the bathroom.

You can technically install tile over tile, but we don’t suggest it. Installing tile over any surface that isn’t a completely flat and prepared subfloor will result in a shoddy overall job, uneven flooring, tiles that don’t adhere, extra weight, gaps, cracks, and room for moisture and dirt to enter. For the best results, only install new tile on a flat, sanded surface like subflooring or concrete that is prepared for tile.

If you have asbestos tile and would rather tile over it than remove it, or if your existing tile is completely flat and bonded tightly to the floor, you may be able to tile over existing tile. But experts recommend thinking twice before you do.
