"We hired Juan for our kitchen backsplash and floor tile installation on our kitchen upgrade project. We ended up hiring him for cabinet, countertop, and range hood installation, too! Juan and his team were absolutely wonderful to work with. He was prompt, professional, and an excellent communicator. His work and commitment to getting it right came through every day, and he has a very collaborative style. His advice gave us confidence in the decisions we were making about materials and installation. Because our home is 100 years old and has many quirks, we had a few surprises along the way. Juan didn't hesitate to offer up solutions. (He put in 6 shims to level our window sill! Something we didn't even know we needed). Our kitchen turned out better than we could have imagined, and it's because of Juan's commitment to excellence (and patience with us!) that it turned out so well."

"The porcelain tile installation turned out better than we hoped. Their workers adapted to the change that proved necessary (we tried to remove the previous tile and cement board underlayment ourselves). They also disposed of the tile we removed. The new floor is a joy to behold."

"Brother and Brother Builders is an unusually fine firm and deserves consideration for anyone contemplating remodeling. After interviewing many competitors, we selected Brother and Brother for our extensive and full makeover that included room additions, building a 700 SF covered deck, the removal of a fireplace and opening of the entire house. None of the existing rooms was untouched. In every stage of the work, Ray was an incredible project manager, from many versions of the planning, to explaining what to expect, to selecting materials, to obtaining permits, and even moving belongings, he was instrumental and greatly eased a very difficult process. He was a fine communicator and we were rarely surprised. Ray employs a small number of work groups with whom he’s been associated for many years. Together, they routinely brought projects to completion on time, or even early. The skill of his craftsmen ranges to drafting, demolition, framing, plumbing, electrical, tiling, cabinetry, flooring, roofing, installation of appliances, and much more. Ray designed a plan that even allowed our family to reside in the house during construction by sectioning off parts of it in succession; i.e.—living in the back of the house while the kitchen/living area was transformed and moving to the front while the new bedrooms/bathroom were being built. Ray even assisted in obtaining other contractors’ services, such as HVAC and installation of a full solar energy system. The end product is a high quality, essentially new house that could not be had by purchasing new construction. Since we’ve had the original house for more than 20 years, it also compares very favorably with new construction from the standpoint of property taxes, even though the quality is much higher. I rarely bother to write reviews, but five stars all around to Brother and Brother Builders!"

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

If you’re out of spacers for your tile installation, you can use pennies. Each time you place a tile, stick the pennies around the edges (on the sides and the corners). Like working with spacers, you’ll want the same amount of space around each tile before they set.

You can attach tiles to a wall using thin-set mortar. You’ll also need a notched trowel to create grooves within the adhesive so it flattens completely when pressed in and securely holds the wall tiles. Finally, you’ll need grout to smooth the gaps between the tiles and, ideally, a grout sealer to prevent mold. While it sounds simple enough, proper planning and execution are crucial, so carefully review the steps in this guide or hire a pro tile installer to complete this project.

No, painting shower tile doesn’t last and is better reserved as a temporary solution to refreshing the look of old tiles. Shower tile paint may last around one to five years, depending on how well you prep the surface before painting, the type of paint you use, the type of tile in your shower, and how often you use the shower.

Thinset mortar is the best adhesive for ceramic tiles on concrete. It is easy to work with and has a slower dry time than mastic or epoxy mortars. This longer dry time gives the installer more time to adjust tiles, which is especially useful for DIYers who may not have tile installation experience. It can also be built up to help level any depressions or gaps in the concrete subfloor.

For best results, you should remove the toilet in a bathroom before removing tile or installing new tile. If you don’t remove the toilet, it will be harder to fully waterproof the tile around the toilet, which could increase the risk of mold growth or plumbing leaks. If you have trouble removing the toilet, hire a plumber to help.
