"Due to a number of large cracks inside and outside of the house, along with skewed doors, I was concerned about structural issues. Greg was able to come out and look at the outside of the house, attic, and crawl space soon after I spoke with him. He explained there isn't anything structurally wrong with the house and the reasons we could be experiencing the issues we're having. He made several suggestions on what to do and how to go about alleviating the issues. Very personable."

With hands on experience in many trades do to his upbringing by his two brothers and father who are all contractors in the Tahoe/Truckee area, Christian has a true advantage over traditionally trained Architects and Engineers. Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

New homeowners in Oakland should start with a comprehensive structural assessment focused on seismic safety and foundation stability. Evaluate for soft story vulnerabilities, unreinforced masonry, and hillside drainage issues. Prioritize seismic retrofitting, foundation repair, and upgrades to meet current building codes. Addressing these areas early helps prevent costly damage and ensures your home is protected against earthquakes and heavy seasonal rains.

Helpful?

In Oakland, if you notice new or widening cracks in foundations, sloping floors, or doors that no longer close properly, these can signal foundation or seismic retrofit issues. Water intrusion, shifting retaining walls, or visible settlement on hillside properties are also red flags. Missing structural drawings, incomplete inspection records, or work that overlooks earthquake safety should prompt a thorough structural assessment.

Helpful?

For Oakland homes, keep a digital level to monitor floor movement, crack monitors for tracking wall changes, and a moisture meter for detecting leaks. Earthquake straps, anchor bolts, and plywood for seismic retrofits are valuable, especially in older homes. Stock waterproof sealants for wet winters, rust inhibitors for metal supports, and basic drainage supplies to protect hillside foundations. Document changes with photos and notes.

Helpful?

Watch for vague or unusually low quotes, lack of detailed scope for foundation repair or seismic retrofit, and professionals who avoid site visits. Be cautious if they don’t provide local Oakland references or seem unfamiliar with hillside or seismic requirements. Insist on clear, written proposals, proof of insurance, and transparent communication. Avoid anyone who pressures you to decide quickly or skips essential documentation.

Helpful?

When hiring for structural engineering in Oakland, prioritize professionals experienced with seismic retrofits, foundation repair, and hillside stabilization. Look for engineers who understand local soil conditions and have completed structural assessments on historic or hillside homes. Confirm they are familiar with CA building codes, carry comprehensive insurance, and offer references from recent Oakland projects. Clear communication and detailed project documentation are also essential.
