"Todd's team did an excellent job building our deck. The quality of their work is excellent and the deck looks fantastic. They completed the job in a timely manner. We found Todd to be knowledgeable, trustworthy and reliable. He's also a nice guy and very easy to work with, as were his workers. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend or hire Todd (T James) and his team again for construction work. We also used the structural engineer Todd recommended to prepare the engineering plans, and that process went very smoothly too."

"We purchased a home a few months ago, and knew that we wanted to build an addition as well as remodel the kitchen. Living here for a few months now we also realized some other parts of the home could use an upgrade, like heating and electrical.
Goodfellas was one of several companies who we contacted to provide estimates and to walk us through their approach on such a project. Tom Levi of their San Jose office got back to use very quickly, and was able to meet onsite just a few days later. We talked extensively about our requirements, priorities and ideas, and we felt Tom had a great sense of what will be important for us and how he could help us make things work - both budget as well as time-wise.
We very much appreciated Tom's honesty and realistic expectation setting, which was nice to see compared to some of the "sales talk" we got from other companies.
Tom continued to be very responsive throughout the process, usually getting back to us within just a few hours and providing clear and concise answers and proposals.
We have now signed the contract for architectural/engineering/permit services - a first step in this larger project. And we are looking forward to starting the work with Tom and his team in January.

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

In Walnut Creek, structural engineering needs shift as homes age. Newer homes may only need minor settling checks, but by 10-20 years, drainage improvements and seismic retrofits become important due to local soil movement. Homes 20-40 years old often require foundation reinforcement and pest repairs, while those over 40 years typically benefit from comprehensive seismic upgrades and updated drainage systems to address Walnut Creek’s earthquake and soil risks.

Helpful?

In Walnut Creek, thorough structural engineering work is indicated by up-to-date permits, final inspection approvals, and clear documentation of compliance with seismic safety codes. Look for detailed soil and drainage reports, photos showing reinforcement methods, and warranties from reputable contractors. Homes with proper foundation anchoring, visible seismic retrofits, and insurance company acceptance often reflect high-quality, locally relevant engineering standards.

Helpful?

In Walnut Creek, neglecting drainage maintenance, allowing water to pool near your foundation, or ignoring shifting soil after heavy rains can undermine structural engineering work. Overwatering landscaping, skipping regular pest inspections, and blocking crawl space vents can also cause moisture buildup or termite damage. Even minor cracks in walls or foundations should be monitored, as ignoring them can allow small issues to escalate in Walnut Creek’s variable climate.

Helpful?

When planning structural engineering in Walnut Creek, knowing your home’s age, foundation type, and history of soil movement is crucial. Details like previous earthquake repairs, drainage patterns, and hillside grading can influence project scope. Understanding HOA restrictions, city setback requirements, and the presence of mature trees or underground utilities ensures your project is tailored to Walnut Creek’s unique conditions and avoids costly surprises.

Helpful?

Completing structural engineering projects in Walnut Creek can significantly enhance your home’s value and marketability, especially with seismic upgrades and foundation improvements tailored to local soil conditions. Buyers in Walnut Creek often seek homes with documented, code-compliant work that addresses earthquake safety. These upgrades not only boost resale appeal but can also make your property more attractive to insurers and buyers looking for peace of mind in a high-demand area.
