Harlequin Designs and Engineering was recently founded by Civil Engineer, Christian Bratt, from Truckee, CA and is now based out of San Francisco.\n\nChristian is ready for any residential design challenges you have. With hands on experience in many trades do to his upbringing by his two brothers and father who are all contractors in the Tahoe/Truckee area, Christian has a true advantage over traditionally trained Architects and Engineers. Being able to implement a design, engineer it, and have a thorough understanding of how it will be built is a perfect storm for saving time, money, and materials.

"I communicated my urgent need for a Retaining Wall Repair Permit because my hillside was slowly moving towards my house. They came out Saturday Morning at 6am to assess my existing wall in my backyard. They completed the site survey on spot & had the finished design with calculations Monday Morning at my doorstep at 8am. We just pulled a Permit at the City and will break ground this afternoon. I did not think we would be able to get started until next week at the earliest. These guys exceeded my expectations. I will recommend them to anyone in need of a Structural Engineer."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

A freestanding brick wall that's only one brick thick can usually stand six to eight feet high. If you need a higher wall, it should be at least two bricks thick for adequate stability, and it might require a footing to support the added weight. Additionally, some areas have regulations and codes dictating how high a brick wall can be, so check with local code enforcers to ensure your proposed wall complies with any regulations.

Most lenders and homeowner’s insurance companies don’t mandate a structural engineer’s inspection, so in most cases, it’s not required. However, it’s a good idea to have one done anyway to ensure you know what you’re buying. You can use the report to carry out repairs after closing or even to negotiate the sale price before closing.

The essential difference between an architect and an engineer is that architects typically focus more on the aesthetic design of buildings, although not without consideration for the structural integrity of the building. Engineers focus more on the structural, technical, and practical aspects of whether and how an architectural design can be built as drawn. You may need to hire both types of professionals if you’re designing and building a new home.

It is not recommended to cut or drill into LVL (laminated veneer lumber) beams. As major structural components of a home, their composite structure can be compromised by alterations, which can weaken them and lead to cracking over time. If you must make modifications to an LVL beam, it is crucial to consult a structural engineer or general contractor first. A professional can advise on whether it's safe and provide specifics on the appropriate bit size, depth, and directionality for any necessary drilling.

Structural engineers draw structural plans, which include detailed drawings of the structural components of a home only. Complete house plans will require additional work from an architect or draftsperson, whose drawings will take the structural drawings into account. They’ll also include more details about the finishing materials and layout of a home, including everything from roofing and flooring materials to the position of furniture, light fixtures, switches, and plumbing fixtures.
