Small jobs welcome

"We had a major two bathroom project that was wrapped around some SF plumbing incompetencies. Johnny and his family business team stuck through it with us. They are authentic old family skilled artisans and know tile, marble and that world inside and out. We had already done the quartz in our kitchen when we met - which I wish they could have also done given the difficulties we faced. Their advice would have better steered our selection and kitchen installation. Qura stuck with us through the project and I know if there is any issue ever they will come and stand behind their work. Thank you Johnny and Al!"

"Words can not express how grateful I am to Jose, the owner of Aztec Tile for going above and beyond to make certain that I had a great customer experience. I had called many tile installers as I needed to get the tile work in my kitchen done as soon as possible. Jose fit me into his busy schedule, gave a very fair and amazing price and the quality of his work was absolutely stunning and beautiful! It is very rare for me to want to spend the time and energy to write commending anyone, but I feel that Aztec Tile and Jose truly deserve to be recognized for their 5 Star Service!"

"I contacted 3 contractors for bids. Jeff Pacini's Tile Works was not the low bidder but was the most experienced and knowledgeable by far. After a follow-up phone call Jeff agreed to match the low bid. He has 6 tile repair specialists who work exclusively for him and he sent Joe to do my repair. Joe was prompt, professional and did a great job. I highly recommend Pacini's Tile Works for any job you have. Great work at a great price!"

"Brian and his crew are the best tile setters in the bay area. Professional, helpful, on-time, and on-budget every time. He did a custom shower top-to-bottom for us, and worked with us every step of the way to make sure we got the exact design we wanted from the shower pan to the fixture placement to the tile pattern. He gives great advice on projects, and has a huge network of excellent referrals for everything from plumbing to cabinets to shower doors to electrical. This was a huge help to us with a recent kitchen remodel, in addition to the backsplash he did for the remodel. His tile work is top-notch - hands-down the best I've ever seen. His attention to detail is unmatched."

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

Removing old tiles can be more complicated, but it can also be more manageable, depending on your circumstances. Typically, old tile is hard to remove because the adhesive had loads of time to bond with your wall, becoming a formidable foe between you and your new tile installation project. On the other hand, old tile in high-traffic areas can become loose, making it much easier to remove.

Yes, it would be best if you waterproofed your shower walls before tiling. The cement backing board behind the tile is not waterproof; it’s only water-resistant. On top of your tile backing board, be sure to use a waterproof shower membrane before you start installing your shower tiles.

When working on your bathroom floor tiling, you should always tile the floor first and then refit the toilet afterward. This has both practical and visual advantages—the tile will have a better seal, and the installation will look cleaner.

On the other hand, when you try to cut the tiles to fit around the toilet, you’re putting yourself at a disadvantage. It’s a lot more work, it’s hard to be precise, and mistakes or miscalculations can lead to future moisture damage to the tiling, grout, and subfloor.

While you shouldn’t use thinset mortar on its own as a floor leveler, it can work alongside other products to help level floors. For instance, you could start with a self-leveling compound, let that dry, then apply backer board with thinset mortar to help fully even out the floors ahead of laying tile.

For glass tile, you want to use unsanded grout. Sanded grout is a stronger and grittier cement grout that is great for installing tiles with wider gaps and into joints. However, it is susceptible to scratching glass tile and is more difficult to use in thinner gaps. Unsanded grout, while more expensive, is easier to fit between thin gaps and is less harsh on delicate materials, like glass tile.
