"Fireplace is great. However, it took 6 weeks and three subsequent visits to fix the first improper installation. On first three visits, the technicians failed to properly install fireplace, making separate errors each time. Each visit was at least two weeks later. Also, we were never advised the fan was not controlled by the remote, so the only way to change its level is to take the bottom front plate out and manually adjust the fan each time we wish to change it, hoping we do not scratch the surfaces. The manager's reaction to my disappointment about this feature was basically indifference."

"I am pleased with the repair of bricks on the top entry step leading into my familyroom and on bottom of the fireplace. Jim and his worker were on time, skilled masonry, cleaned the area and removed debris."

"Spectrum One is our choice over and over again for renovating our home, which was built in the 1960s. Dennis comes out and looks at the scope of the project and gets back to you in a timely manner with an incredibly detailed and professional proposal. He takes into account your vision for the home and offers suggestions for improving the project or explains how the team can make that vision come to life. The project managers who oversee the project from start to finish have been diligent, respectful and ensure that the work being done is of the highest standards. They are on-site every day with a whole team working to get the job done as beautifully and as quickly as possible. The attention to detail from the whole group is what I most appreciate. We have used them for whole-home flooring (removal, installation and baseboards), recessed lighting, countertops, backsplash and would trust them with any project. We recently completed a third project with Spectrum One that included widening doorways, redoing an outdated fireplace hearth, and remodeling two bathrooms. Everyone at Spectrum One is quick to respond, honest, creative, and fun to be around. We love them and highly recommend to anyone looking to do a renovation, repair, or build!"

"I hired Michael in late December to install my countertops. I had originally given him good ratings on Angies list because he was on time, efficient and reasonably priced. My issue now is with follow up. The piping to the sink started to leak and the caulking around the sink is starting to come apart. Now i understand that sometimes things like this are unavoidable and i do not blame Better Home Repair for it. But when i called to have them come out to take a look at it, i got no response. I left a number of messages on their voicemail, as well as one with a young lady, and got NO response. I wanted to hire them to do my laminate flooring, but i think i'll be looking else where."

"Wonderful job and met the surprise challenges that an older home presents after you open up the floors and walls and ceilings. showed up on time daily and finished the project at the time frame projected. Cleaned up after each day and protected the rest of the house. Reasonable and pleasant personality for Steve Caskey as well as his co-worker and sub-contractors. Tile work presented some difficulty due to uneven floor and the tile man made it perfect. Best remodel job I could have asked for. I get many compliments on the the looks of the final product."

Small jobs welcome

"Very prompt, professional, made some low-level suggestions to try before extending chimneys. If his suggestions don't work, will definately hire him (Paul and Sons). Vig wanted to extend the chimney with no guarantee that it would solve my problem, and to start the work and "work out a price later". I requested an estimate prior to him starting work and have not heard back from him so far."

Chimney Repair questions, answered by experts

Black stains appear on wood furniture when the surface comes in contact with water and metal for an extended time. It creates a chemical reaction that stains your wood black. Products that contain oxalic acid can remove these stains. Its bleach-like qualities can reverse the stains after a few rounds of application.

It’s not recommended that you get rid of your mattress if you’re experiencing a bed bug infestation. This action could cause the infestation to spread to other people and homes. Instead of replacing your mattress, you should take steps to eliminate the bed bugs from the mattress and then focus on preventing further infestations.

Yes, you can fill rotten wood with expanding foam. You may prefer using an expanding foam treatment instead of wood filler since the latter can take a long time to dry. It may also provide an easier solution when you’re dealing with smaller gaps. If you use expanding foam, allow it to cure for about 24 hours before you sand and prime it.

Yes, in most cases it’s a good idea to wrap furniture in plastic to protect it from dirt, dust, and damage during storage. However, natural and porous materials such as wood or leather should have breathable fabric covers to prevent moisture damage from condensation. Either way, it’s always important to ensure proper ventilation to prevent moisture buildup, especially in humid climates.

Fixing a drawer that is sticky, askew, or broken depends on the specific problem. Start by removing the drawer and examining the slides and tracks for any damage, bent parts, or loose hardware.

For minor issues:

  • Clean and Lubricate: If the slides are just sticky, clean them and the corresponding tracks with a hot, damp cloth. Then, apply a lubricant like silicone spray or bar soap to help them glide smoothly. Also, check any roller wheels for problems.

  • Tighten Screws: Tighten any loose screws on the slides and tracks. If screw holes are stripped, you may need to fill them and re-drill.

For more significant damage:

  • Bent Hardware: If a slide is bent, you may be able to remove it, straighten it out, and reinstall it.

  • Broken Parts: If a slide or track is broken or severely damaged, it will need to be replaced. Unscrew the damaged part and install a replacement that matches the type and size of the original.

After performing the repair, reinsert the drawer and test it to ensure it opens and closes smoothly, making any final adjustments for proper alignment. It can also be helpful to consult the manufacturer's guidelines for your specific drawer system.
