"Mark asked the right questions about our project and I knew by how he spoke to me about the project that he understood what needed to be done to get started. Mark pursued the information needed from city planning and permits to the specifications and details about our swimspa which is the focal point of our project. We've been delayed in demolition and construction because of Covid-19 but I know it will get done and be perfect because of Mark's team and their meticulous attention to detail. I can add more when our project is complete!"

Architects questions, answered by experts

The essential difference between an architect and an engineer is that architects typically focus more on the aesthetic design of buildings, although not without consideration for the structural integrity of the building. Engineers focus more on the structural, technical, and practical aspects of whether and how an architectural design can be built as drawn. You may need to hire both types of professionals if you’re designing and building a new home.

Stone, marble, and brick are common building materials of Neoclassical architecture, though you will also find wood flooring and a range of natural stone tiles. Since several home styles fall under Neoclassical architects' umbrella, a range of building materials—including traditional wood framing—will make an appearance.

The various types of architects can be broken down into eight distinct categories, but there can be specific specialties within each of them. Most homeowners will work with a residential, restoration, green, interior, landscape, or retrofit architect for projects. There are also lighting and commercial architects whose work is geared more toward large spaces and businesses.

In the United States, architects must be licensed in all 50 states and the District of Columbia before being allowed to practice or seek business. Licensing requirements vary state-to-state, but overall the architect must be educated, attain a certain level of experience, submit to and pass an examination, and register as an architect. Find out if your architect is licensed using Angi’s contractor licensing search tool

Mid-century modern architecture was a popular home style throughout the U.S. from the 1950s to 1970s. Most homes feature a wide and symmetrical floor plan with low-sloped roofs and floor-to-ceiling windows. Its minimalism and balanced appearance are back on the home style scene, particularly when maximizing sunlight, airflow, and a blend with the home's natural surroundings.
