It can be difficult to know what type of animal is in your attic until you see it. But several clues can help you narrow down the suspects:

Grass spiders, also known as funnel-web spiders, are the culprits here, building small webs directly into the grass to catch any insects that have the misfortune of crawling too close. They are often confused with wolf spiders, as the two species look nearly identical, but grass spiders are actually great helpers in maintaining your lawn.

The difference between fruit flies and gnats is the foods they eat. Fruit flies eat overripe fruit and high-fructose organic substances. Fungus gnats live in the soil and feed on houseplants. Both are quite small, but if you can discern their appearance, you'll also notice that fruit flies are a lighter tan color, while fungus gnats are a darker gray or black.

Luckily, skunks aren’t challenging to get rid of. You can try to remove them slowly by filling their den entryway loosely with newspaper. Many skunks notice their den is in jeopardy and take off on their own. You can also try making a homemade spray of jalapeno pepper, yellow onion, and cayenne pepper—believe it or not, skunks are sensitive to these smells, so if you spray this around the den or in hard-to-reach places around your property, most skunks will take the hint and leave. 

Earwigs may look scary with their pincers, but they don’t pose a serious threat. They don’t sting, and bites are rare. They might pinch if handled roughly, but it's more of a nuisance than a danger. They’re not known to transmit disease, but you should still alert a pest control pro if you have a large infestation inside your home.
