A technician came out promptly but said a blower motor was needed, which would have to wait until the next day due to parts warehouse being closed that evening. When the tech contacted me the next day, he said the part would have to be ordered and not be in until late Thurs, with installation now sooner than Fri. The tech then told us on Fri morning that the part wouldn't be in until Monday. Our area was under a heat advisory, and at no time did the tech display any sense of urgency, nor did they attempt to obtain the part from any other supplier in the greater Bham area. Extremely poor communication, planning, and service. I will NEVER use Ontime again."

Not necessarily. Some portable air conditioners may be vented out a door, wall, or ceiling—or even into another room. It’s not necessarily dangerous to run a portable air conditioner without venting it, but it is counterproductive since the unit needs to vent the heat in order to cool the room down in the first place. Without venting your portable AC unit, you’re essentially running a dehumidifier and increasing the temperature in the room. 

While it is possible to add Freon to your AC unit yourself, it is not recommended. In fact, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) prohibits the handling of Freon without a license. Freon is a dangerous gas that can cause irreversible damage to your AC or yourself if not installed correctly. It is worthwhile to hire a professional to add Freon to your AC.

Trick question: There is no difference between an AC and a furnace blower motor. Whether you have central air and heat or just one of these, the same blower motor carries hot and cold air throughout the ductwork in your home. Certain systems may have separate blower motors for the AC and furnace, but each serves the same function.

Turn your system off when you're toasty or when you're out to prevent unnecessary wear. Using the timer on your thermostat so that it switches off when it reaches a certain temperature or turns on just before you get back from work is best. An annual maintenance contract can be helpful to ensure your system receives these important services at regular intervals.

Most HVAC companies charge a flat service call fee of between $75 and $150, which includes traveling to your home and inspecting your system to find the underlying problem. Keep in mind that these prices only include diagnostics and the actual repairs will usually be billed separately. If you’re calling for routine service, the service call will be included in your inspection and tune-up, with the total sitting around $150. Your prices could be a little higher if you have a very large home with multiple condensers and air handlers, as inspections and servicing take longer.
