"Scott showed up exactly when he said he would - He was very professional and friendly. He was kind enough to wear "booties" throughout the house and be respectful of my belongings if he had to move anything. I was very impressed with the quality of work and the time he spent on the windows. I live off the freeway and it's been a LONG time since the outside of the windows has been cleaned - he had his work cut out for him but they turned out beautiful and look like they are brand new. I have chosen to hire him on a quarterly basis from now on - I would recommend him to anyone - great service, great individual, great company - Thank you Scott!!!"

Sonic Cleaning questions, answered by experts

It is not advisable to DIY a roof cleaning job. Cleaning your roof yourself could lead to hazardous falls, scrapes, and even burns, making this a dangerous project. Additionally, using the wrong cleaning solution or cleaning method on your roof could risk damaging it. While some markets offer a DIY roof cleaning kit, these products often speed up the deterioration of your roof.

To ensure that you and your roof are protected, it’s best to leave roof cleaning to a professional with the right chemicals, tools, and equipment to complete the job safely.

You may become so frustrated with the look of moss on your roof that you contemplate whether to clean or replace your roof. Fortunately, you don’t have to go as far as replacing it. After cleaning the moss, you can use a chemical solution to keep it away. For further protection, trim branches that overhang the roof, as fallen seed pods and leaves on the roof allow moisture to collect, encouraging moss growth. Consider adding zinc-coated flashing to the roof, too. As rain washes across the zinc, it leaves zinc particles behind that inhibit moss growth.

In most cases, it is best to leave icicles on your roof and allow them to melt naturally. You should only remove them if they are heavy enough to cause damage to your home or pose a safety risk to people below. Attempting to remove icicles yourself can be dangerous, so if you are concerned about immediate damage, it is recommended to hire a professional. To prevent icicles from recurring, you should address the underlying cause, which is often poor insulation. Long-term solutions include improving your home's insulation or installing roof heating coils.

Complete house winterization goes above and beyond the list we created above. In addition to everything listed, full house winterization also includes:

  • Performing a home energy audit.

  • Preparing your deck and patio for winter.

  • Learning how to start a snowblower.

  • Replacing smoke detector batteries.

  • Installing outlet gaskets.

  • Installing storm doors.

On average, cleaning a roof will take between two to five hours. This timeline depends on the size and slope of your roof and the severity of any stains. Cleaning roof stains can take additional time, especially if there are signs of moss or algae.

In addition, the age of your roof makes an enormous difference in the time it takes to clean it, as older roofs need more gentle care. If you have significant landscaping in your yard by your house, your professional roof cleaner will need additional time to protect it from cleaning chemicals.
