We are not tied to any specific PV manufacturer and will source the best solution for your location and situation. Solar energy is no longer idealists' domain - it makes solid financial sense. What I’m doing: Handyman jobs and Volunteer work. I keep myself busy on days without paying jobs by doing FREE referral work. If you contract me for a project let me know if there’s someone in the community who may need a hand. Availability: 24 hour availability, 7 days a week. Basics: I’ve got a truck and most tools for my skill sets. If you need general work done at home (plumbing, electric, door, cabinet, drywall, appliance removal/install, remodeling, repairs, maintenance) or automotive (brakes, oil, belts, battery, alternator, not sure) let me know and we can discuss details and a quote. Thanks!

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

A common HVAC rule is that for every 500 to 600 square feet of living space, you need 1 ton of heating or cooling capacity. Now that you know this common rule, you also need to know that it isn’t very accurate, and a dedicated pro wouldn’t use it for your home. If you talk to a pro who won’t or can’t perform a proper Manual J calculation, consider hiring someone more thorough.

Yes, you can build a deck over your outdoor HVAC unit, but you need to leave at least 5 feet of vertical clearance above the unit. If you don’t want your deck to be that high off the ground, you could build a floating deck in another part of your yard—again, as long as you leave at least 4 feet of horizontal space between the deck and your AC unit.

A dirty air conditioning coil can cause your unit to work overtime, leading to reduced efficiency, higher energy use, more wear and tear, and possible ice buildup. If the coils corrode, refrigerant can leak, causing damage, possible mold growth, and an expensive repair bill. By cleaning your AC coils once a year, you’ll have a more efficient unit that’s likely to last longer.

You should schedule a full-service AC inspection at least once a year to ensure it works properly. During this time, your local AC repair pro will check:

  • Safety components, such as carbon monoxide leaks

  • Cooling components, like coolant levels

  • Electrical components, such as inspecting fuses and wiring

  • Complete system services, like flushing the drain line

While you can DIY some aspects, like changing your air filter, it’s imperative that you call in a pro to inspect your AC for you. Your air conditioner has refrigerant that could be hazardous to your health if not handled properly, so it’s best to let a pro with experience take on this job.

The size window AC you need depends on the BTU and the size of the room you’re cooling. For a room with 8-foot ceilings, look for about 20 BTU per square foot of the room. For example, a 12-by-12-foot room should have an air conditioner with 2,880 BTU. You can buy something slightly more powerful, but don’t overshoot the BTU for a small room, or you’ll waste energy and have higher bills.
