"The work was good. A group of workers came to do the work who were directed by someone else who was working for Watry Homes. I felt like I was a little misled since Watry claimed not to use subcontractors. Subsequently, they came (mid Dec. 2010) and repaired at no cost to me damage I caused on the roof during shoveling. Very generous of them!"

"We hired Jeff in fall 2013 to do some stucco repair on our chimney, and based on the excellence of that work (timeliness, quality, professionalism of crew, responsiveness), we hired JJB to do our kitchen remodeling this past January.  Again, Jeff and his crew, as well as the subcontractors, were professional, considerate, reliable, and did excellent work.  We have four indoor cats and everyone was very attentive to keep them from getting outside.  Jeff was in constant contact with us and met whenever we needed.  All kitchen remodels are disruptive, but this went much more smoothly than I had envisioned.  One minor mistake was taken care of immediately and to our complete satisfaction (actually worked out better, in fact).  We will be using JJB again in 2015 to do plaster work in the dining room and hallway."

"An old shed had to be removed on a very short time line. J&B Restoration came in on the day and time specified and gave as a quote for the work. They tore the shed down in about an hour but a subcontractor who was to bring in the trash container for the debris got lost. Even though they had to do twice the expected work because of his mistake and stay on site several hours more than expected they kept to their quoted price. They did an excellent job of cleaning and raking the work site. We are extremely happy with their work!"

Subcontractors questions, answered by experts

Structural engineers draw structural plans, which include detailed drawings of the structural components of a home only. Complete house plans will require additional work from an architect or draftsperson, whose drawings will take the structural drawings into account. They’ll also include more details about the finishing materials and layout of a home, including everything from roofing and flooring materials to the position of furniture, light fixtures, switches, and plumbing fixtures.

Hiring a professional to do a loft conversion will certainly speed up the process. The construction steps required to change the slope of the roof can be quite difficult to do as a DIY job. Should the project run into any snags, like rot in the joists, frayed wiring, or roof leaks, hiring a local home remodeling professional makes it far easier to handle these issues safely.

Federal architecture is most common in urban areas throughout the New England states, including the older parts of New York, Pennsylvania (namely, Boston and Philadelphia), Maryland, Massachusetts, and Virginia. The style also dominated in parts of Georgia in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, so many historical homes in the area embody this home design. Salem, MA, has two historic districts that predominantly feature this architectural style: Chestnut Street District and the Salem Maritime National Historic Site.

Yes, new home construction will always require building permits, no matter where you live. In most cases, you’ll need a general construction permit, along with plumbing and electrical permits for the utility lines in your home. Depending on where you live, you’ll likely find that you also need permits for things like connection to a sewage system or installing exterior components, like decks, driveways, patios, and curb cutouts. Leave navigating the permits required for new home construction to a professional to ensure your home is built legally and safely.

An architect is usually involved in the process of determining the layout and structural features and requirements of the home itself, taking into account the local codes, climate, and materials needed to make the home structurally sound. Architects may communicate more with contractors and subcontractors throughout the building process. In comparison to architects, interior designers typically focus on the aesthetics of a home interior and possibly exterior, helping the homeowner decide on color schemes, textures, and materials to incorporate into the design.
